Australia Currency Guide

Currency

Australia uses the Australian Dollar.

ATM

ATMs can be found all throughout Australia, particularly in cities and large towns on main streets, in shopping centres, convenience stores, petrol stations and rail stations. If you are heading to smaller towns, the outback, islands or coastal regions, ATM facilities may be more scarce although you should be able to find machines in convenience stores, petrol stations, outside banks and in hotels, hostels and airports throughout the country. If you are an international traveller and plan on withdrawing money or using your credit card in Australia, don't forget to notify your bank before you go for security purposes.

Cash

For international travellers, before you leave home it is important to convert some of your currency into Australian Dollars to have with you when you arrive. Australian Dollars are also available to purchase from Travel Money Oz when you arrive in Australia.

Travel Card

For large purchases, it's a good idea to bring a credit card or travel money card with you on your holiday instead of carrying a lot of cash. If you don't have a credit card, consider a prepaid Multi-currency Cash Passport™, which lets you access your money in the form of Australian Dollars from ATMs and wherever MasterCard® is accepted.
