Brisbane Weather Guide

As the capital of the Sunshine State, subtropical Brisbane enjoys an average of eight hours of sunshine daily where the summers are hot, humid and wet and the winters are mild, warm and dry. To avoid the humidity of the summer months, early autumn and spring are the best times to visit Brisbane to take advantage of the sunny and pleasant conditions.

Season and Clothing

Summer: December to February

Brisbane’s hottest months are also the wettest. Expect hot, humid summer days with clear skies and temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius. Afternoon or evening thunderstorms usually cool everything down or head inside for some air-con fuelled respite. Rainfall takes the form of torrential downpours with spectacular thunderstorms and even hail before brightening into sunshine again. Summer coincides with school holidays and the Christmas hols when many Aussies head north on vacay.

Average temperatures: 20 – 31 degrees Celsius
Appropriate clothing: Singlets, shorts, thongs, swimwear and dresses
Don’t forget: Sunnies, a hat and SPF50+ sunscreen

Autumn: March to May

Autumn is glorious in Brisbane with warm to hot sunny days and slightly cooler nights. Some residual summer rain may still linger around in March but on the whole the days are warm where you can still swim outside in March and April. The comfortable conditions make this a great time to see the sights and walk around without breaking into a sweat. Event-wise, the Brisbane Comedy Festival and Brisbane Queer Film Festival are both on in March.

Average temperatures: 13 – 29 degrees Celsius
Appropriate clothing: T-shirts, shorts, dresses and pants
Don’t forget: Good walking shoes.

Winter: June to August

While acclimatised locals find it somewhat cold, winters in Brisbane are mild compared to the southern capitals and characterised by dry, sunny days, chilly nights and the occasional morning fog. The cooler wintry winds can send locals scurrying for jackets and scarves, however most days still enjoy highs in the 20s and temps rarely drop below 10 degrees Celsius at night. The Ekka (Royal Queensland Show) and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival both hit town in August.

Average temperatures: 10 – 23 degrees Celsius
Appropriate clothing: Clothes for layering – jeans, t-shirts, tops and pants
Don’t forget: A jacket or jumper.

Spring: September to November

Coming out of the winter months, Brisbane’s springtime offers fabulous sunny weather with pleasantly warm temps in September and early October. Late October sees the mercury rise to the late-20s with accompanying humidity, but it’s still a pleasant time to see the sights around town, eat outside and enjoy the awesome weather. The Brisbane Festival and Riverfire fireworks show is on in September and Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) hits town in November.

Average temperatures: 14 – 28 degrees Celsius
Appropriate clothing: T-shirts, shorts, dresses and pants
Don’t forget: Trainers.
