Cape Town Weather Guide

Situated at the southern end of South Africa, Cape Town enjoys a climate comparable to that of the Mediterranean with warm, dry summers and a mild, wet winter. The water temps can be quite cold in the Cape, even around summer, with an average of around 13 -17 degrees Celsius.

Season and Clothing

Summer: November to February

Cape Town's long hot summer can see the mercury reach up to 40 degrees Celsius inland, although the southeasterly '‘Cape Doctor' can get quite gusty to the point of knocking people over (!) but it helps to shift the smog from the city. The ‘'Berg' wind from Karoo, on the other hand, is hot!

Average temperatures: 13 - 27 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Shorts, t-shirts, swimsuits.
Don't forget: SPF 50+ sunscreen and a hat.

Autumn: March to April

The relatively short autumn season is one of the best times to visit the Cape with warm sunny days and balmy nights - ideal conditions for sightseeing, hiking around Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope to see the autumn colours, and alfresco dining in the city's outdoor cafes.

Average temperatures: 12 -25 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: T-shirts, shorts, lightweight pants, dresses.
Don't forget: Good walking shoes.

Winter: May to August

Contrary to the rest of the country, Cape Town's winters are wet with bouts of rain showers and the occasional thunderstorm. The rainy days are still broken up with cool sunny days of up to 25 degrees Celsius, and chilly nights during the colder months. Best to pack for all seasons!

Average temperatures: 7 - 20 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Jeans, t-shirts, long-sleeve tops.
Don't forget: An umbrella and light waterproof jacket.

Spring: September to October

Wildflowers are in multicoloured bloom during the short spring, so head to Table Mountain National Park to see the flora in all its glory. Southern right whales also make an appearance off the coast during these months where the weather is still mild and pleasant for outdoor activities.

Average temperatures: 9 - 21 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Lightweight clothes for layering - pants, long- and short-sleeve tops.
Don't forget: A camera.
