Hong Kong Weather Guide
Located in a subtropical region, Hong Kong is a great place to visit all year round. There are 4 distinct seasons: a warm spring, hot summer, cool autumn and mild winter. The area is prone to thunderstorms and cyclones from May to November as well as typhoon season in September.
Season and Clothing
Summer: June to September
Summer in Hong Kong city is very hot and humid with temps of 32 degrees Celsius and over in the hottest months of July and August. There are also frequent thunderstorms and the occasional typhoon during this season.
Average temperatures: 26 – 32 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Shorts, t-shirts, lightweight dresses.
Don’t forget: Sunscreen and an umbrella.
Autumn: October to November
The short autumn season brings drier and cooler conditions with plenty of sunshine making it an ideal time to get outdoors and hike around Hong Kong’s many walking trails. With more stable weather conditions, autumn is considered the best time to visit Hong Kong.
Average temperatures: 19 – 28 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: T-shirts, short or lightweight pants, thin jacket.
Don’t forget: Good walking shoes and a camera.
Winter: December to February
The winter months in Hong Kong are dry and mild, although the occasional cold front can see the temperature drop suddenly to below 10 degrees Celsius before climbing back up again. Pack a variety of clothes to combat the changeable weather.
Average temperatures: 14 – 19 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Jeans, pants, long-sleeve tops.
Don’t forget: A woollen jumper and coat.
Spring: March to May
Expect a warm and humid spring season in Hong Kong, which may also be accompanied by light showers and foggy weather. It may also be cooler at night than during the day so be sure to take some form of cover up with you.
Average temperatures: 17 – 29 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Clothes for layering - t-shirts, pants or shorts, dresses.
Don’t forget: A light jacket and an umbrella.
