Istanbul Weather Guide

So you think Aussie summers are hot? Try a summer in Istanbul. It’s not uncommon for daily temps to be above 40 degrees Celsius and the humidity is off the scale too, although some days can be a little milder, hovering around 28 degrees. In winter, it’s wet, cold and sometimes temps go below freezing. Spring and autumn are just divine though, and a great time to visit the city.

Season and Clothing

Summer: June to August

If you can bear the heat, summer’s a great time to visit Istanbul. Most tourists are hitting the coastal towns down south in Turkey, so the room rates are much more reasonable during this time of year. Temps here are pretty damn hot though, with regular temps of more than 40 degrees Celsius. It’s also quite humid and rarely rains in summer.

Average temperatures: 16 – 27 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Lightweight clothing in light colours, sandals and trainers.
Don’t forget: Sunscreen, sunnies, a hat and glam gear for night-time.

Autumn: September to November

Unlike many other European destinations, autumn is high season in Istanbul, so expect bigger crowds and to pay a little extra for your room. The weather has cooled down a little, so you won’t have to face the blistering heat and the skies are still bright. The climate can be sometimes unreliable and unpredictable in autumn though, so pack for a variety of weather conditions.

Average temperatures: 8 – 24 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Jeans, long skirts, shirts, t-shirts and trainers.
Don’t forget: To cover your legs and shoulders if you are visiting the Blue Mosque and other religious sites.

Winter: December to February

Because many Turkish resorts are closed in winter, you’ll really only find visitors in Istanbul during these months. But not loads of tourists. In winter the temps can sink below zero here, but the average is between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius. It can be quite windy in winter too and even snows for about 2 weeks. Now is a great time to check out the Grand Bazaar and the city’s museums.

Average temperatures: 2 – 10 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Jackets, scarves, jeans, pants and long-sleeve tops.
Don’t forget: Boots and socks if you need to take your shoes off inside.

Spring: March to May

Spring is high season in Istanbul. The blistering heat of summer has not yet arrived and the skies are bright and blue.  Daily temps hover between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius and parks are blooming with beautiful tulips and other flowers. It’s also Anzac Day season, so if you’re around before April 25, chances are you may bump into some Aussies before they make their way to Gallipoli. Don't miss the cultural experience that is the Turkish hamam on your holiday here.

Average temperatures: 4 – 20 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Items for layering, dresses, pants and thongs for the hamam.
Don’t forget: A lightweight jacket or blazer for cool nights and to dress up for clubbing.
