Perth Weather Guide

Perth is the sunniest city in Australia with an average of 8 hours of sunshine all year round. Winters are wet and mild and summers are hot and dry. Western Australia experiences a dry heat, which many people prefer to a humid one, however thankfully in the afternoon, a cool wind, known as the ‘Fremantle Doctor’ or just ‘The Doctor’ usually blows in from the ocean during the summer.

Season and Clothing

Summer: December to February

Beachgoers from cooler climates might find the summer months in Perth a little challenging – temperatures have been known to reach over 40 degrees Celsius so you best ‘slip-slop-slap’ on that sunscreen. The heat doesn’t keep the festival circuit at bay with a number of musical festivals going down over the summer months – Stereosonic, Future Music and Laneway Festival all come to town during the holiday season.

Average temperatures: 18 – 30 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Shorts and t-shirts, skirts and dresses.
Don’t forget: A hat, sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and swimwear.

Autumn: March to May

The weather in Perth cools down a little during autumn and is one of the best times of the year to visit, comfort-wise. Soundwave music festival hits here in March and the West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots festival rolls in around April. During the first week of May, Taste Festival Perth celebrates the region’s amazing food and wine in a weekend-long event with Eat Drink Perth in April a precursor to the event.

Average temperatures: 15 – 25 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Jeans and t-shirts, shorts and dresses for warmer days.
Don’t forget: A light jacket for cooler weather, hat, sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and swimwear.

Winter: June to August

Winter temperatures usually hover around 15 degrees Celsius, however don’t get caught out in the cold when the temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius on a clear, cool night. In Perth when it rains, it pours. Storms with strong winds occasionally howl in the winter evenings but are never too threatening. Perth shakes off its wintry shackles for the City of Perth Winter Arts Season with over 200 events across the genres of theatre, film, comedy, cabaret, opera, literature, circus, dance, music and visual arts over the 3 winter months.

Average temperatures: 8 – 20 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Jeans, long-sleeved shirts, warm clothes for layering.
Don’t forget: A jacket, raincoat and umbrella.

Spring: September to November

In spring, the weather quickly begins to warm, a precursor for the sunny months ahead. The weather is generally fine and with scant rainfall. The Perth City Twilight Hawker Markets kick off in October and run through to April offering loads of new taste sensations such as Brazilian, Caribbean, Moroccan, Venezuelan, Southern American, Egyptian and Thai cuisines and even dishes from the Australian outback. Get down to sideshow alley and spin out at the Perth Royal Show in September.

Average temperatures: 15 – 25 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Jeans and t-shirts, shorts and dresses for warmer days.
Don’t forget: A light jacket for cooler weather, hat, sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and swimwear.
