Phuket Weather Guide

Don't let the climate jargon fool you. Phuket may have a tropical monsoon climate, but for all its moody monsoons there's plenty of time for sunny beach days as well. Here's a rundown of what to expect during the 3 annual seasons on the island.

Season and Clothing

Dry Season: November to February

As a tropical island close to the equator, the weather in Phuket is warm and humid all year round. While there is little change in temperature, the biggest difference is in regards to rain. The dry season from November to February is when precipitation is at its lowest, although rain is still common, albeit in short downpours that quickly clear. While the dry season is considered to be the best time to go to Phuket, it is also the most expensive with the tourist high season causing equally high accommodation rates.

Average temperatures: 23 - 31 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Shorts, t-shirts, a bathing suit and sandals.
Don't forget: SPF50+ sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

Hot Season: March to June

While it's technically not that much hotter than the other seasons in regards to temperature, the humidity during this time is sky high. For all its hot weather, the days during Phuket's hot season are ideally sunny and made for swimming, though you will need to have the air-conditioning on at all other times. As the temperatures rise, accommodation prices drop, so if you don't mind a bit of sweat this can be a great time to visit Phuket on a budget. Don't forget to cover up if you are visiting the island's wats or temples.

Average temperatures: 24 - 32 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Summer clothes, a bathing suit and sandals.
Don't forget: Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

Wet Season: July to October

While rain in Phuket is common throughout the year, it falls at its heaviest from around May to October. Granted, the wet season isn't an ideal time if you're looking to enjoy an outdoor holiday, but with rain falling in short and heavy bursts, you can get away with some rainy moments before the sun shines again. With the rain, temperatures and humidity a lot more bearable than in the hot season, July to October is classified as Phuket's low tourist season, so if you're looking for a budget holiday, consider risking the rain and travel in the wet season.

Average temperatures: 24 - 31 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Summer dresses, shorts, tees, swimmers and sandals.
Don't forget: Sunscreen, sunglasses and a packable raincoat.
