Season and Clothing

Summer: June to August

On an average summer day you can expect the temperature to reach a high of around 13 degrees Celsius and drop below 10 degrees at night. Recently these temps have been a little higher though, but you might not necessarily feel is at the city also battles with strong winds in summer. Because of its slightly warmer temperatures, summer is Reykjavik’s peak tourist seas.

Average temperatures: 7 – 14 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Light and warm layers to mix for day and night.
Don’t forget: A warm coat to protect you from the wind.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn brings cool wet conditions to Reykjavik with an particular emphasis on wet. The season experiences continuous rainfall and pretty strong winds, sometimes reaching gale force. Temperatures drop to as low as 7 degrees during the day and even cooler at night. Autumn days are also shorter and there’s less sunshine.

Average temperatures: 0.5 – 11 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Warm layers, gloves, scarf, beanie and water-proof coat.
Don’t forget: An umbrella or raincoat.

Winter: December to February

Brrr, it’s cold during Iceland’s winter (duh) but it’s also the best time to see the Northern Lights. If you’re lucky the average high will be around 2 degrees Celsius but don’t get too excited because there will probably be regular storms, snowstorms and no sunshine for about a month too. On average you’ll be treated to around 4 hours of sunlight each day in winter so be sure to make the most of it!

Average temperatures: -2 – 3 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Lots of warm layers, thermals, beanie, gloves, scarf, study boots and a warm water-proof coat.
Don’t forget: Warm clothes, seriously, don’t forget!

Spring: March to May

Spring is a lovely time to visit Reykjavik as it’s much dryer and there’s more sunshine. The temperatures are still fairly low though and winds can make it seem even colder. In April and May days can get as low as 0 degrees, but the highs are around 6 degrees.

Average temperatures: -2 – 10 degrees Celsius
Appropriate clothing: Warm layers, gloves, scarf, beanie and water-proof coat.
