Icy in winter and rainy in summer, Rio runs quite close to having a tropical monsoon climate, but it's not all doom and gloom. Here we run through the best time to go and enjoy a sunny day at Copacabana.

Season and Clothing

Summer: November to February

Contrary to popular belief, summer in Rio is less about sunny beach days and more about torrential rain. Granted, the days are quite hot and humid so if you do manage to experience a sunny morning, you'd best hot foot it to the beach. But with cold fronts moving in from Antarctica, for every sunny morning there is likely to be an afternoon thunderstorm. Storms do pass quickly though, often leaving blue skies and beach-perfect weather behind. Just be wary that they don't  return again - hopefully after Carnevale though, which takes place around February just before Lent.

Average temperatures: 22 - 26 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing Summer clothes, bathing suit and sandals.
Dondon'tt forget Sunscreen, hat and a raincoat.

Autumn: March to May

Autumn in Rio is a case of extremes. On one hand, at the beginning of season it is one of the rainiest times of year. While on the other, towards the end of the season, May presents some of the best weather with warm days and less humidity. To see Rio at its best, it is commonly recommended to travel here between April and May.

Average temperatures: 21 - 27 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing Light layers, bathing suit and sandals.
Don't forget: Sunscreen, a hat and a raincoat.

Winter: June to August

Winters in Rio are quite mild and the city experiences the lowest precipitation of the year. During this time, temperatures and humidity levels drop slightly to reveal cool but never really cold weather. The cooler temps make winter an ideal time to explore the hinterland and hike through Rio.

Average temperatures: 18 - 25 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing Light layers and comfortable boots.
Don't forget: A light jumper for night-time.

Spring: September to October

For a hot and heavy beach holiday in Rio, you'd best book your flights for spring. This season enjoys low humidity but high temperatures with hot days averaging around 23 degrees Celsius. The weather during this time is ideal for sunny days spent at the beach - your choice whether you opt for a body baring Brazilian-cut cossie or not!

Average temperatures: 20 - 25 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing Light layers, bathing suit and sandals.
Don't forget: Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
