San José Currency Guide

Currency

San José uses the Costa Rican Colón, although US dollars are widely accepted in Costa Rica too.

ATM

ATM facilities can be found throughout San José, although it’s best to stick to machines in public and well-lit places. If you plan on withdrawing money or using your credit card while travelling, don’t forget to notify your bank before you go to see if your card will work in Costa Rica and for security purposes.

Cash

Before you travel, it’s a good idea to convert some of your Australian Dollars into Costa Rican Colónes to have with you when you arrive. In Costa Rica, you won’t be able to exchange your Australian Dollars, so have some US Dollars to exchange or use as currency. US Dollars are easily converted at airport counters or in banks in San José, although in some rural areas will not be able to exchange currencies.

Credit Card

For large purchases, it’s a good idea to bring a credit card with you on your holiday to San José instead of carrying a lot of cash. Plastic is accepted everywhere; however Visa and MasterCard are your best bet. If you don’t have a credit card, consider a debit credit card that allows you to access your savings account and the local currency from ATMs and wherever credit cards are accepted.
