Tokyo Weather Guide

Mild is probably the best way to describe all seasons in Tokyo. The winter season is not too cold, the summers aren’t too hot and autumn and spring is just lovely.

Season and Clothing

Summer: June to August

Summer in Tokyo is pretty warm and humid with average temps around 29 degrees Celsius, although temperatures can get as hot as 31 degrees with some freak 40 degree days recorded in June. Summer’s also when the most rain falls and sometimes typhoons hit the coasts. The wettest month is June and the sun doesn’t peek its head out too often.

Average temperatures: 18 – 29 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Shorts, t-shirts, skirts and dresses.
Don’t forget: A raincoat.

Autumn: September to November

Move over cherry blossom season. The Japanese gardens can be just as lovely in autumn as the leaves fall and a blaze of orange, red and bronze takes over. It’s quite a fresh time of year with gentle breezes and comfortable temps from 17 degrees to 27 degrees Celsius. This season is also jam-packed with exhibitions, sport tournaments and concerts in Tokyo.

Average temperatures:17 – 27 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Clothes you’d wear in an Australian autumn.
Don’t forget: A light jacket to ward off any wind chill.

Winter: December to February

The temps in winter plummet with average temps around 10 degrees Celsius. In winter, the mercury rarely dips below 0 degrees in the evening and the daytime temps hover around 10 degrees. The coldest month in Tokyo is January with lows of around 2 degrees. In the mountains, snow falls, which makes Tokyo less busy as all the tourists are chasing powder. But when the snow starts to melt, Tokyo once again becomes the busiest city in Japan.

Average temperatures: 2 – 10 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Clothing for layering and a warm coat.

Spring: March to May

If you like pretty flowers and festivals that celebrate pretty flowers, spring is the time to come to Tokyo. Yes, it’s cherry blossom season! The days are warm with temps ranging from 15 to 23 degrees Celsius. Golden Week, marking the time around national public holidays at the end of April and start of May, is the busiest season for travel so if you want to avoid the price hikes, give Golden Week a miss.

Average temperatures: 15 – 23 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Floral prints – it’s cherry blossom season!
