Fiji Airport: Nadi International Airport is Fiji’s main international airport. Located 10km from the city, Nadi International is a single terminal airport and the main hub for Fiji airline, Air Pacific. Other airlines that fly from Australia to Fiji include Air New Zealand, Jetstar and Virgin Australia. See map
Getting from the Airport: Travelling from Nadi International Airport to your Fiji accommodation is really easy. In fact, you may find your hotel or resort will offer to pick you up from the airport free of charge. If you need to arrange your own transport you can catch a taxi or take a shuttle bus. If you choose a taxi it is possible to barter your fare. To give you a good idea, it generally costs $12 (AU$7) to travel from the airport to Nadi city. If you’re looking for the cheapest option, public buses stop outside the terminal and travel to the city for a few dollars. Car hire is also available at the airport.
Before you Go: Before travelling to Fiji, take some time to read up on the country and familiarise yourself with their customs. For example, when visiting a local village always remove your hat as a sign of respect. Similarly, it is customary to remove your shoes before entering a house.
Fiji is a relatively safe and tourist friendly country to visit but do be wary of the sword scam. Street vendors carrying carved wooden swords are known to engage with tourists and upon learning their name will carve it into the sword and push them to buy it. Avoid getting scammed by not engaging with such vendors.
Lastly, it’s important to arrange travel insurance before you go. It may be the last thing on your mind when planning your trip but accidents can happen and it’s better to be prepared for them than not. Talk to your Student Flights consultant about what coverage is best suited to you.
What to Bring: Packing for Fiji is pretty lax. A few swim suits and light layers are all you really need. Fiji is a relatively conservative country so when visiting markets, villages and other public places, avoid wearing skimpy clothes and make an effort to cover up. Leave some room in your suitcase so you can bring home a few sarongs known in Fiji as ‘sulus’, which come in a range of prints and are uni-sex.
If you’re staying at a resort don’t forget to bring your credit card to pay for all those cocktails! ATMs are available in the main areas but are less common in Fiji’s remote regions.
Other essentials to pack include sunscreen, insect repellent, toiletries, a comfortable pair of shoes and a back pack for day tours.
During your Flight: The direct flight from Sydney to Nadi in Fiji takes approximately 5 hours. While onboard, make time to stretch your legs and drink plenty of water to keep hydrated.
