For rugged Hawaii at its best, the Kalalau trail is the only way to access the Na Pali Coast by land. Located on the island of Kauai, the trail runs from Haena State Park on the island’s north shore, to Kalalau Beach. Though tricky at times, the trail winds around varying terrain and boasts spectacular views from towering sea cliffs and old Hawaiian ruins. Experienced hikers will be able to complete the whole trail in a day, while beginners may wish to just walk the 3km to Hanakapi’ai where you can relax at a secluded beach and journey up into the Hanakapi’ai Valley to see the waterfall.

Volcanoes National Park is another extreme location that attracts adventurers at heart. Within the park, adrenaline junkies can explore the summit of Kilauea Volcano and witness lava flow into the ocean. Accessed by car, the road around Kilauea passes through vast terrain from lush forests to deserts, providing ideal stops along the way. The lava flow of the volcano is always changing, and in 2003 it crossed the Chain of Craters Road. As a result, always err on the side of caution and stop in at the Kilauea Visitor Centre to check conditions before taking the drive further.
