The ancient Pantheon is one of Rome’s most famous buildings. The circular building dates back to 126 AD when it was built as a temple for the gods of Ancient Rome. Later on in the early 7th century, following the rise of Christianity, the Pantheon was converted into a Christian church. The buildings biggest drawcard is the magnificent dome ceiling featuring a nine metre hole in the middle, known as oculus. Head to the Pantheon on a sunny day to see the sun shine through the oculus and light up the interior.

Another icon of Rome not to be missed is the Colosseum. The epic amphitheatre dates back even earlier than the Pantheon, built by the Roman Empire between the years 70 and 80 AD. The original purpose for the Colosseum was to entertain the masses with gladiator shows, executions and classical plays. Today, it is a major tourist attraction, with travellers eager to see the remnants of the biggest building ever built by the Roman Empire. Don’t miss the museum dedicated to Eros located in the upper floor on the outer side of the building.
