Few destinations draw in young Aussies more than Bali holidays, just a 5 hour flight from Australia's East Coast. Small enough to drive around in a day, it's a paradise packed with things to do.
If you're on a budget, October – May (with the exception of Christmas/New Year) is the best time to travel with great value Bali holiday packages available throughout this time. Accommodation is cheap - you can get comfortable rooms for as little as $20 US a night. When booking, ask for an "all inclusive" price, as some hotels charge a 24% services tax - quite an expense if you're not expecting it.
Transportation in Bali is cheap. Whether by Taxi (look for the blue ones), minibus or motorbike, you can get away with just a few dollars a day.
It's not very expensive to travel in Bali, if you're happy to live like the locals do. A dollar or two can buy you a meal or a couple of bottles of water. Indonesian food is both flavourful and cheap.
The best spot, if you're looking to party is Kuta. Kuta Beach has long been one of the most popular in the world and visitors from all over the world pack its clubs and restaurants. Nightlife in Kuta starts quite late, usually around 12.00 – 1.00am. There are a lot of popular bars and clubs, such as Casablanca, Paddy's (rebuilt not far from the original), Sky Garden, Hard Rock Café and Centre Stage. M-Bar-Go has great music and is a hit with the 'in crowd'.
From 2am, it's time to hit Syndicate, Bacio and Double Six, three large, open air discos with several bars, huge dance floors and plenty of tables. They're next to each other on the beach at Seminyak and charge and entry fee for which you'll receive a drink voucher. This is where you'll find Bali's serious night owls.
30kms from Kuta, lies the artisan town of Ubud, where craftsmen offer their wares – jewelry, carvings, paintings, clothes and ceramics. It's small enough to walk around and is the perfect escape from the manic bustle of Kuta.
You can get a shuttle to Ubud from Dempesar Airport, or hire one of the minibuses the locals use. You can rent a bike for a day and really explore. While there check out the Monkey Forest, Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave) and Gunung Kawi (Poet Mountain Temple Complex- the 371 steps are worth the effort, the view is breathtaking.
There are several popular dive sites in Bali; most notable is the USAT Liberty Shipwreck. Also try Amed, on the south eastern coastline, which has 3 sites. If you're after a relaxed laze on the beach, try Amed, Lovina and Petmuteran.
Whatever your desire, you will never forget your Bali holidays. Your experience is limited by just one thing – you. How much can you handle?
