Health

Malaria is a risk outside Bangkok and in the major tourist resorts. Physicians advise immunisation against Hepatitis A and Typhoid fever. There have been also been cases of bird flu, although the likelyhood of this is very low, providing all poultry and egg dishes well cooked and contact with live birds should be avoided.

Travellers may be suceptible to food and water borne diseases so drinking bottled or sterilised water is definitely recommended. Medical facilities are generally good in major cities, however without insurance, cash or credit card, travellers will not be treated so medical insurance is considered essential.

Customs

Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon so best to be discreet. An informal dress code is more than fine, however beachwear should be reserved for the beach only.

Safety

Thailand holiday travellers should be aware that there is an ongoing threat of terrorism throughout South East Asia so you should be alert whilst in public places and tourist resorts. Do not camp in undesignated areas in national parks and avoid the border areas. Keep an eye on your passports and credit cards avoid carrying much money or jewellery. Be aware of scams involving gems and never accept drinks from strangers.

Since the Asian Tsunami, services and facilities in most popular Thailand holiday destinations that were affected are now operating as normal. During the monsoon season, (September and October) the north, north east and central regions experiences flooding which often causes mudslides and flash floods. Visitors planning a Thailand holiday trekking in the jungle during this time should check conditions with licensed tour guides before leaving.

The Malaysian border is unstable for travel particularly around Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat and Songkhla as fighting has killed and injured many people in public places. Thai authorities have put additional security measures in place throughout the country making most places calm however, visitors should avoid government buildings and military personnel.

Visas, passports and entry requirements

Visas are not required for Australian and New Zealand passport holders for stay up to 30 days. Travellers entering Thailand are required to prove they have sufficient funds to cover the length of their stay, and should hold documentation for return/onward travel. Entry may be refused to travellers of a 'hippy' appearance.
