Middle East Tours

Things to do in Middle East

Boasting the beautiful old town of Jerusalem as its centrepiece, Israel also features the sacred outcrop of Masada, the Dead Sea, the vibrant city of Tel Aviv and the Sea of Galilee where a certain carpenter’s son walked on water.

Across the Sinai in Egypt, experience the ancient legacy of the Pharaoh’s by exploring the Pyramids on the Giza Plateau, the Karnak Temple complex in Luxor and the artistic perfection painted on the tomb walls in the Valley of the Kings. A felucca boat trip down the Nile is a great way to witness river life first hand and admire the impressive temples dotted along the bank.

Remember the ANZAC legacy with a tour to Gallipoli in Turkey. Alternatively, make your own last crusade and explore the impressive rock architecture at Petra in Jordan.

Mix up the pace with one of our Dubai tours in the United Arab Emirates where you can quite literally scale the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa before returning to sea level and lazing on a local beach.

HIGHLIGHTS: Amman - Aqaba - Wadi Rum - Aqaba - Petra - Jerash

    DAY 1: AMMAN
Make a beeline for Rainbow Street for a falafel and a sheesha. It's what the locals would want. Arrive in Amman and check in to your hotel. There is usually a meeting at the hotel at 6pm, where you'll meet your tour leader and group.

    DAY 2: AMMAN - AQABA
Hop on a JETT bus for a four-hour journey down the Desert Highway to Aqaba. Keep your eyes peeled for camels at around the 230km mark. Out to the left. No, the other left.

DAY 3: AQABA - WADI RUM - PETRA
After an optional snorkel in the Red Sea, it's off to Wadi Rum where you'll explore the desert moonscape with the crazy young local Bedouin in their rickety old jeeps. Awesome desert landscape with rocky outcrops. Arrive in Petra for the evening.

    DAY 4: PETRA
When confronted with the stunning facade of the Treasury building in Petra, you might scratch your head and wonder why it looks so familiar. Unless you haven't seen Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade, then you might not recognise it at all (and you will probably be the butt of a few jokes. Go and watch it immediately). Explorethe ancient city of Petra. Optional walks to the Monastery and up the clifftop path overlooking the Treasury. Wander through the narrow 'siq' and the numerous tombs, temples and public buildings - as well as the rock-hewn amphitheatre. Keep an eye out for the cafe run by Marguerite van Geldermalsen, the Kiwi woman who has been living in Petra with a local Bedouin for 30 years or so. Relax with an optional Turkish Bath at the hotel.

    DAY 5: PETRA - AMMAN
Speaking of Crusaders, they built Shobak Castle atop a grassy knoll and thought it would last forever, but Saladin's Arab army knocked it over after an 18-month siege. Reach Dana and stroll though the ancient village, buy some crafts in the craft centre. Visit the Greek Orthodox church of St. George, which houses a6th century mosaic map depicting the old city of Jerusalem. Arrive in Amman and head out out on the town.

DAY 6: AMMAN - DEAD SEA - JERASH - AMMAN
Do your Biggus Dickus impersonation in Jerash's main street, then take an optional excursion to the Dead Sea where you can get that photo of you reading a paper while floating on the water just like the ten billion visitors before you. Take a morning tour of the grand ancient city of Jerash. Perhaps visit the Dead Sea in the afternoon, or simply explore Amman further.

    DAY 7: AMMAN
The tour ends in Amman after breakfast. You can (and probably should) kick around in Amman for longer if you want. There's heaps more to do, just ask your tour leader for pointers.

From Jerash we visit Ajloun Castle with spectacular views over the Jordan Valley. We arrive back in Amman for

    HIGHLIGHTS: Jordan

We will enjoy a variety of desert trekking and short sections of scrambling, some of which are more challenging. The week is brought to a fascinating close with a day visit to the historical city of Petra, a must for any trip to Jordan. While trekking you will be surrounded by breathtaking scenery in a stretch of desert full of history. Wadi Rum is where Lawrence of Arabia and Prince Faisal assembled the Arab tribes for the attack on Aqaba in the First World War and where sections of the film of 'Lawrence' were shot. Whilst in the wadis, or valleys, the trekking distances are reasonably short as the sandy desert floor makes our walking speed slow. On the jebels, or mountains, the terrain is a mixture of granite and sandstone and the grip under foot is good.

Day 2 Tel Aviv - Jerusalem
We begin early today with a brilliant Totally Topdeck bike tour of Tel Aviv, taking in some of the city's oldest quarters including the bustling port area of Old Jaffa. Afterwards we'll take a drive to see landmarks such as Independence Hall and Rabin Square, before transferring to Jerusalem in the late afternoon.

what are people saying about tours?

Having not travelled too much I wasn't sure if a tour would be be my cup of tea. Oh how I was wrong, we had an extremely packed 1 week on the west coast of USA and saw some amazing things including The Grand Canyon and Monument Valley, and the small group was filled with great people, very down to earth and loads of fun. Highly recommended!
