Surviving the post-holiday blues

Greetings from planet Jet-lag! Today is my first day back behind the SF blog desk after a blissful 3 week long holiday in Europe. Ahhhhh riding bikes through Paris, partying in London – it was grand! I have plenty to share with you all and will be blogging about my adventures soon, but for now, while I survive on three hours sleep, I’m going to talk about the post-holiday blues.

How to avoid the post holiday blues

The post-holiday blues is the weird feeling you encounter after returning home from an amazing trip. It’s one-part jet lag, one-part hangover and two-parts wishing you were on holiday again. It often hits you the day you go back to work or uni, and it is no fun at all! But there are things you can do to counter act the post-holiday blues:

 

Make your bed before you leave

After almost 24 hours in transit, I lugged my suitcase home on Sunday night to find my room in a mess and my bed looking disgraceful. Learn from my mistakes people and for the love of God make your bed before you leave. There is nothing more depressing than dreaming about lying in your own bed, only to come home and find it looking worse than a makeshift bamboo bed from Survivor. It may be the last thing on your mind but aim to make your bed before your holiday. Hell, even change the sheets if you can be bothered – it will make all the difference to enjoying a much-deserved good night’s rest.

 

Don’t go to work or uni the very next day

Considering I’m struggling through the minutes at work on my second day back in the country, I’ve come to the conclusion that only the delusional return to work or uni the next day after their holiday. Avoid keyboard shaped sleep marks on your face or erratic tute rants by sitting the first day out.

 

Treat yo self!
If there’s one thing that Amy Poehler ‘s cult-hit tv show Park and Recreation has taught me (besides the fact that Ron Swanson is the best human being that has ever lived), it’s that there’s never a bad time to treat yo self!

 

 

Take a tip from Tom and Donna and treat yo self to a post-holiday chill out session. My treat of choice? A massage and Parks and Recreation marathon!

 

Start planning your next holiday

If the travel bug has got you good then why not start planning your next holiday? Even if it’s just a weekend away with friends or a day of pure fun at a theme park, a short break is exactly what the travel doctor ordered to counter-act those post-holiday blues. Right now I’m dreaming of a weekend on Stradbroke Island and lucky for me there is a long weekend just around the corner.
