Travel Confessions: MTV EMAs winner Georgia Thompson
When the call came through that uni student Georgia Thompson had won a trip to attend the MTV European Music Awards Amsterdam 2013 with Student Flights, she wasn't sure if it was real or not! Possibly the best comp ever, MTV EMAs winner Georgia was the envy of music fans and party animals to nab VIP tickets to the awards in Amsterdam on November 11 plus return flights and an 18-day Topdeck Winter Rhapsody tour for two, thanks to Student Flights. Talk about lucky! She got to see Miley Cyrus twerk (and light up onstage!), Katy Perry dangle from wires illuminated by green lasers and Will Ferrell ham it up as Ron Burgundy.
After the awards, Georgia joined the Topdeck bus tour through Eastern Europe checking out the sights of Rome, Venice, Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest, Krakow, Prague, Berlin and Amsterdam. Once she'd recovered from her whirlwind trip, we caught up with Brissie-based Georgia to get the lowdown on what went down at the MTV EMAs and on tour. Here's what she had to say:
How was the trip overall? The trip was amazing and I made some amazing friends and saw some amazing places. I love travelling, so this was a dream come true.
Have you been to any of those destinations on the tour before? I have been to Italy before with my family when I was a kid, but not to any of the other places.
So, what went down at the MTV EMAs? The EMAs were fantastic! I saw some amazing people perform and the atmosphere was unbelievable. I was sitting in the VIP section of the EMAs where I had a seat in the stands and had access to the free bar - free drinks all night!
What goss can you share with us from the MTV European Music Awards? I think Miley Cyrus did actually smoke weed on stage...
Did you see any celebs? Not up close, but I wasn't too far from the stage.
What was your highlight of the awards? Seeing Eminem. Eminem was a highlight because I had always wanted to see him perform but never had the chance to.
What was the best part about the Topdeck Winter Rhapsody tour? Making friends and exploring the cities. On the tour we went to the Netherlands, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Poland and Germany.
Would you recommend this tour to others? Yes, the timing in each place was perfect. Almost 2 nights everywhere.
What made the tour for you - people, places, food, sightseeing? It's a tie between everything really!
What was your fave city or destination on the tour? I was surprised with Budapest. It was definitely my favourite place. I wish I had more time to explore. I loved it because I was surprised with the amount of history there and the nightlife was fun.
Any tips for travelling around Europe you'd like to share? Well in the winter, definitely pack more clothes. I was freezing!
Have you kept in touch with other Topdeckers? Yes, mainly my close friends that I made, but the whole tour has a chat group on Facebook.
What's the one memory you've taken away from the Europe trip? Too many to count, I wouldn't say it was just the one!
What's your next holiday destination? I actually had a tour around Europe planned already when I got the call that I'd won, so I'll be back in January with my best friend.

Croatia's best kept secret (hint - there's no beach)
Most of us have swooned over photos of Hvar’s pristine bays; have dreamt of days shucking oysters and partying under the stars in Dubrovnik; and have made an enquiry or two into the partying sun storm that is Yacht Week.
Killer views in US national parks
We all know that the USA can get a bit carried away boasting all things ‘bigger’ and ‘better’, but when it comes to the epic natural scenery, they’ve really nailed it. Enormous parts of the nation are protected under national park status, preserving their unique features.
