Staff Picks hotel review: Patong Resort Hotel

Published August 25th, 2014

Accommodation options can be way too overwhelming. Too much choice. On your beach holiday, you pretty much just want a central location in a safe area with a great atmosphere, all the mod cons, close to the shops, shore, dining options and nightlife, with happy hour drinks by the pool – right? Luckily for you, our travel consultants have already checked out heaps of hotel facilities before you check in to give our Staff Picks properties their A-OK. Student Flights Sydney Central Assistant Manager Josh Cranston had the hard job of rating Patong Resort Hotel. Here’s his verdict...

Josh at Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi.

I love Thailand, having been on a trip earlier this year to Krabi and Bangkok with Intrepid. This was my first time in Phuket and I had the most amazing time. In fact, the only lowlight about my time here was leaving! I stayed at Patong Resort Hotel, which is just off Patong Beach, right near Bangla Road and the Banana Discotheque. The hotel itself is awesome with  a super fancy-looking lobby with a cool bar and smiley staff – plus doormen!

A Standard Room at Patong Resort Hotel in Phuket.

My air-conditioned Standard Room had everything you need: a balcony overlooking the gardens, a flatscreen TV, bar fridge and a clean bathroom. Within the hotel there’s two pools, restaurants, a nice bar and masseurs onsite. One of the big bonuses is the bar next to the pool with happy hour drinks. As part of the Staff Picks hotel package, you get free beer on arrival, free wi-fi (even by the pool!) and a free epic breakfast daily. Amazing value for money!

Cable wakeboarding at Anthem Wakepark.

Being  so close to Bangla Road and Patong Beach, there’s so much to do. I partied on Bangla Road, got massages, chilled out on the beach and did a tour around the islands including Koh Phi Phi. I also went to Bimi Beach Club right on the sand on Surin Beach and partied like rock stars with the beautiful people. My standout highlights, however, included seeing a Muay Thai boxing match and going cable wakeboarding at Anthem Wakepark. It’s on a freshwater lake and it’s the first clockwise cable park in Asia with heaps of obstacles and instructors on hand to help you with surface tricks. Not as easy as it looks, but heaps of fun!

All up, Patong Resort Hotel is perfect for travellers on a budget who want somewhere comfy right near the beach and party central – it’s easy to feel like you’re living it up! My other top tip would be to get exploring and check out some of the other beaches beyond Patong if you have time. I’ll definitely be back – it’s crazy value for money in the perfect location with heaps to do!

A backpacker at heart, I am always looking for the best value way to maximise my experiences around our beautiful world. It's a hard choice but India, Hungary and Myanmar are just a few of my favourite stops so far!
