Get your Stranger Things happening this Halloween - visit the show IRL
Written and directed by the Duffer Brothers, the Stranger Things Netflix series quickly developed a cult following from July this year, making it the third most watched original Netflix series.
One of the series’ biggest draw cards is its 1983 setting, saturated in a rich coating of eighties pop culture nostalgia. The show was also heavily inspired by the films of that era by the likes of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter and Stephen King.
The eerie beginning sets off alarm bells when a 12-year-old boy goes missing, terrified by something that the viewer can’t see. If you haven't seen the show yet, prepare yourself with enough popcorn and supplies to last through the inevitable 24 hour Netflix binge that will ensue.
What better way is there to celebrate being a diehard fan than to visit the actual locations where filming took place in Atlanta, Georgia? Better yet, why not get another fan to get you there, someone who can truly appreciate the genius that is Stranger Things? Our in-store travel experts are just like you, young, adventurous, well travelled and ready to bond over a mutual love of Netflix. So what are you waiting for?
Hawkins National Laboratory a division of the U.S. Department of Energy
Exterior shots of the lab where Eleven was tested on were taken at the Georgia Mental Health Institute. Creepily the institute was in fact previously a 141-bed psychiatric hospital. True story.
The Bellwood Quarry in Atlanta is where Eleven saves Mike from jumping off the cliff and where Will’s fake body is found. The quarry has in fact made a number of cameos in movies including The Walking Dead and was bought by the city of Atlanta in 2006 with plans for it to be opened as a public park in the Atlanta Belt Line.
Hawkins Middle School and Hawkins High School
Most of the exterior and interior shots of the middle and high school were taken at Patrick Henry High School in Stockbridge, Georgia. In the series you see the kids attend a memorial service for Will, use the school’s Ham radio and finally battle the monster in a science lab.
Exterior shots of the Hawkins Library came from the outside of the Probate Court of Butts County. It’s here that we see Chief Hopper get told off by the librarian for not calling her back after a date and where he does research on the Hawkins National Laboratory.
Stone Mountain Park
Most of the shots from the woods are from the 1,300-hectare Stone Mountain park. The park also boasts an adventure course, train ride around the mountain, skyride on a cable car, camping and museums.
Benny’s Burgers, 4819 Randolph Lane
The scene that sees Eleven first enter the town is at Benny’s Burgers which is an IRL diner called Tiffany’s Kitchen in Lithia Springs, Georgia. You can even go there and order a plate of french fries just like Eleven. Though we would recommend you come through the front door and not make any attempt to steal them.
