8 legendary Aussie hostels giving hostel a good name

Published November 25th, 2016

Oh the art of hostelling, ear plugs, check; locker padlock, check; shower flip flops, check. Once you’ve got your backpack ready to go with all of the backpacking essentials the only thing left to do is pick a hostel.

Whether you’re trekking around the whole of Australia, along the coastline or just getting away for the weekend, picking the right hostel can mean the difference between you becoming a Crying Jordan or Chewbacca Mum.

Here are some of the best hostels in the game, ready for you to froth over, and they just so happen to be smack bang in our own backyard. To book one of these sweet sweet pads and heaps more check out our friends over at Hostelworld, or in the links below.

1.Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse

This is about as boutique-y as it gets. The award winning Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse is everything you’ve ever wanted in a hostel based in the centre of historic Battery Point, Hobart. Beautiful hardwood floors, brick fireplaces, french doors that open onto a quaint outdoor deck with super cute red and creme bicycles for use. It already feels like home.

2.Bounce Sydney

Voted as the best hostel in Sydney and Australia numerous times over, this bad boy lives up to its name! Conveniently located next to Central Station and spruces clean and modern surrounds with killer rooftop views of the Sydney CBD. Bounce also has heaps of activities lined up each evening to get you mingling with your fellow travelers. These include rooftop BBQ’s, getting taken to Sydneys best backpacker night clubs, pub crawls, pizza nights, movie nights and much much more.

3.Fremantle Prison YHA

This World Heritage 19th century former prison will simultaneously be both the coolest and creepiest place you’ve ever stayed in. Guests get to sleep in the original cells of the prison and hang out in the prison yard which sports some fun upgrades since its Orange Is The New Black days like giant chess, volley ball, outdoor movies and ping pong!

4.Adelaide Central YHA

This cool modern hostel is exactly what you’re after when you’re looking for a centrally located, clean, cool and safe haven to come home to after being out exploring the city. Adelaide Central YHA is as the name suggests, located smack bang in the middle of the city looking out over Light Square. Newly renovated private rooms also feature TVs and private balconies.

5.Aquarius Backpackers Byron Bay

Quite possibly one of the best perks of any hostel has to be a free meal every night of the week! That’s how you’ll kick off your stay at Aquarius which is also located just 150 metres from Byron’s Main Beach. Kick back and relax in one of the chic beachy private rooms or party it up at the attached bar and huge pool area!

6.Home at The Mansion, Melbourne

Voted as the best hostel in Melbourne three years in a row, The Mansion is as you’ve probably guessed by now, Richie Rich’s former residence and very OTT. If you’re not already sold on how baller this place is then I'd suggest you stay home in your own obviously baller af mansion because you’re going to have no fun sliding down the long winding bannisters of this baby. Besides oozing character and heritage at every corner this place isn’t cramped with only 16 rooms and 94 beds in total, so plenty of people to make friends with but not too many.

7.Noosa Flashpackers

It’s all in the name here because this hostel is indeed pretty pretty pretty flash alright. Besides looking spiffy on the inside and outside with clean, modern and fancy furnishings, there’s also a cute little pool with wooden deck, free breakfast, free surfboard and body-board hire. Naturally on Mondays they also serve free cheese and crackers, on Tuesdays is $8 pizza and Fridays involve a free Aussie BBQ, now that’s living.

Voted as the Best Hostel in Australia 2016 at the Golden Backpack Awards (yep that’s a real thing), it’s not hard to see why. There’s free breakfast each morning, a free shuttle from the bus station and is located right in the heart of Brisbane’s nightlife hub of Fortitude Valley. Art galleries, pubs, nightclubs, cafes, ethnic shops of every variety are all within 100 metres from the front door. There’s also a pool and hot tub to boot.
