From here we walk away from the crowds to Piazza Mattei to see the Turtle Fountain and enjoy the lively atmosphere with nearby bars bustling with Roman youth, and a Rome sightseeing highlight.

The next stop is the Jewish ghetto filled with kosher restaurants and shops. Learn about how the area was affected during the war and pass by the synagogue. Nearby is the Marcellus Theatre, an ancient Roman theatre that has been incorporated in Renaissance buildings. These buildings have been converted into homes that are thousands of years old, which gives this Rome trip a unique sense of history.

Afterwards continue your Rome walking tour to Piazza Venezia home to a huge monument to King Vittorio Emanuele II, known locally as the "typewriter" due to its shape. The final stop before saying goodbye to your Rome guide is the Colosseum, the city's most famous landmark. There is time left to take a look of the Arch of Constantine right in front of the Colosseum before your Rome tour ends. Be sure to enter the Colosseum afterwards to explore the interior.

Be sure to throw a coin into the fountain to ensure that you will come back to Rome again. Your local Rome guide will then take you a little further along to the beautiful Piazza Colonna, home to Palazzo Chigi, the seat of the Italian government and nearby Montecitorio, house of the Parliament.

Next your Rome guide will take you to Palace Madama, a Renaissance building that is now the seat of the Italian Senate. A short walk away is the Piazza Navona, site of the beautiful Four Rivers fountain by Bernini. The elliptical shape of the piazza indicates that Romans used it as a chariot racing ground.

Complete your Rome walking tour by visiting another hidden gem, the statue of Pasquino. It is one of the "talking statues" of Rome, so called because written notes have been posted on it by Romans since the Renaissance period. In front of the statue is an excellent enoteca (wine-bar) where you can rest, drinking a glass of wine chosen from a list of more than 3,000 and taste delicious cheese and prosciutto. What better way to end your Rome tour adventure!

This evening we meet our tour guide and fellow travel companions at a Welcome meeting (details will be posted on the hotel noticeboard). Your tour guide will collect your local payment of EUR100 at this meeting. We can then join our tour guide for an introduction to some fabulous Turkish cuisine in a street side cafe (optional).

Day 2 Istanbul - Kayseri. This morning our guide shows us the treasures of the Old Town including the Topkapi Palace, the iconic Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome. Day 4 Cappadocia. We drive to the top of the trail at the beginning of the Akvadi (White Valley) and walk amongst fruit gardens and vineyards to arrive in UChisar around noon. Day 3 Istanbul - Gallipoli - Canakkale. This morning we head for Gallipoli, a place of immense significance to Australians and New Zealanders. It is a spot of pilgrimage and reverence and the calm lapping waters belie the murderous campaign that took place here. This now serene site, located at Turkey's most westerly point, played a crucial role in 1915 for Allied forces in the First World War that included other Commonwealth and British troops, as well as the French and Turkish. We spend time visiting the battlefields, monuments and cemeteries before driving to our hotel in Canakkale in the afternoon. (Approx driving times 5.30 hours)

Day 4 Canakkale - Ayvalik. For those who wish, there is the possibility of organising an optional excursion to Troy, where we can explore the ancient walls, climb around the ruins and gaze across the Troad (the Plains of Troy) towards the waters of the Dardanelles and the hills of the Gallipoli Peninsula. We can walk the marble streets once trodden by Antony and Cleopatra and marvel at the gymnasium, baths and the wonderfully restored Library of Celsus. Close by is the last home of the Virgin Mary who, as legend has it, came here accompanied by St John and lived out her days in this beautiful spot. We spend the night in SelCuk. (Approx driving time 4 hours).

Today we will make our way to Antalya, en route we will drive to Olympos and see the flames of Chimera before driving on to the ruins of ancient Lycian city of Phaselis. Founded in the 7th Century BC, Phaselis flourished as a commercial trading centre where anything could be bought and sold, including citizenships for 100 drachmas The Phaselians were more concerned about preserving the affluence of their commerce than with staking any political independence, so they pragmatically accepted any conquerors that came their way. The city thrived until the 12th Century when it was superceded in importance by the nearby ports of Antalya and Alanya. The beauty of Phaselis is in its picture postcard setting. It is built around three small bays, each with its own beach, surrounded by frAgrant woods and mountains. We continue to Antalya and will arrive in the late afternoon. After settling into our hotel we head out to discover Chora, the main settlement of the island and a typical Cycladic town. Its bright white cubist houses, labyrinth of narrow winding streets and small churches are great to wander around. For those who wish, we can take a walk to the top of the hill, where a church is perched and from here you have stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. The remainder of the day and evening is free, so why not wander around the village and find a local taverna to sample some delicious Greek Island cuisine.

Day 5 Ios. Today is a free day to enjoy Ios. The island is known for its great beaches so you may wish to spend the day relaxing on one of these. A local bus or caique (boat) can take you to Manganari beach on the south coast, with a long white sandy shore, it's considered one of the best beaches on the island. Or perhaps you'd prefer to visit one of the more remote beaches on the north coast, such as Psathi, Kalamos or Agia Theodoti. There are plenty of optional water sports available on the island. Your leader will point you the right direction of how to access these beaches. Alternatively you may wish to visit to the Ios's archaeological museum in Chora which displays exhibits of interesting finds from the island.

Day 6 Ios - Santorini. We take a ferry today to Santorini, considered one of the most beautiful islands of the Cyclades. The island was formed from a series of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes over thousands of years. Today an incredible caldera remains, surrounded by colourful steep cliffs; this is an icon of the island and a spectacular sight. Our base here will be the capital of Fira, a lively town with plenty of restaurants, bars and shops available. This afternoon we take an orientation walk around Fira town and to the nearby Imerovigli village. Perched at one of the highest points on the island, Imerovigli is a beautiful and peaceful village and due to its strategic location was historically used by villagers as a lookout point for the looming arrival of pirates.

Day 7 Santorini. Today is a free day to explore Santorini. There are plenty of things to see and do on the island. You may wish to take a boat out to Volcano Island to find out about the island's famous volcanic eruption. Santorini is also known for its white wine production so a visit to one of the island's wineries, for a spot of wine tasting, is a good option. Another possibility is an optional bus tour around the island. And for those wanting to learn more about the history of the island, the Museum of Prehistoric Thira houses an impressive range of archaeological finds from the site of Akrotiri. Aside from that, there are plenty of places to sit back, relax and unwind including one of the islands black - sand beaches. Late this afternoon we regroup and take a local bus out to the charming town of Oia. This is the perfect place to watch the Santorini's spectacular and famous sunset. The remainder of the evening is free so why not plonk yourself in one of Oia's local restaurant, perched high up on the cliffs and enjoy a delicious seafood dish amidst stunning views.

Day 8 Santorini - Athens. It's our last morning to enjoy Santorini before we make our way back to Santorini's port for our return journey to Athens by ferry. We arrive in Athens late in the day (depending on ferry schedule) and then transfer to our hotel for a last night in Athens.

Day 9 Athens. Your tour ends after breakfast in Athens.

what are people saying about tours?

Having not travelled too much I wasn't sure if a tour would be be my cup of tea. Oh how I was wrong, we had an extremely packed 1 week on the west coast of USA and saw some amazing things including The Grand Canyon and Monument Valley, and the small group was filled with great people, very down to earth and loads of fun. Highly recommended!
