Plan your travel to Bali with maps, info, photos and cheap deals
Bali has long been favoured by Australians who want to get away to a tropical island that's affordable, safe and easy to get to, and Bali ticks all of those boxes. You'll also find a rich culture and beautiful natural scenery, with locals so friendly and laid back that it will take only moments for the stress of city-life to be a distant memory.
Part of Indonesia, Bali is one of more than 17,000 islands that make up the Indonesian archipelago and though small in size it punches well above its weight in luring visitors to its tropical charms. The island is also close to mainland Australia, being only about 1,800 km from Darwin, so it's just a short hop across the Timor Sea and you're in holiday heaven.
Bali's population is approaching 4 million residents so you will certainly get to know the local customs, but around ninety percent of the population follow the Hindu religion and are a very peaceful and spiritual people. Balinese is the national language but you'll find most of the locals (especially in the tourist areas) speak English so communication is rarely a problem.
Bali's countryside is varied but this offers wonderful opportunities to see a range of different landscapes if you can drag yourself away from the beach, pool, or resort! Bali is mountainous from the centre to the eastern part of the island with the largest mountain being Mt Agung, an active volcano. The northern part of Bali drops away to the black sandy beaches of the north coastline while the southern region is comprised of lowlands. The beaches on the southern coastline are dazzling white sand and it's here that many tourists spend most of their time. The centre of the island is filled with rice paddies and lush forests. Surrounding the island are beautiful coral reefs that are perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling and the southern beaches have some great surfing spots that attract surfers from around the world.
Bali is a warm, welcoming island with a countryside bursting with nature's most beautiful scenery and is filled with locals who are genuinely welcoming of visitors. A holiday to Bali will have you living 'Bali time' in moments and you'll be planning your next visit even before you've left.
