Can one country have it all? Malaysia just might! Home to a diverse range of Malay, Indian, Chinese and indigenous cultures, as well as countless natural wonders, Malaysia truly is a fantastic holiday destination.

Malaysia's geography is almost as diverse as its culture. The country is made up of two major components: Peninsular Malaysia which is where the capital, Kuala Lumpur, is located, and also the tropical resort islands of Langkawi, Penang, Redang, Pangkor, and Tioman; and East Malaysia on the exotic island of Borneo which has the states of Sarawak and Sabah. It is Peninsular Malaysia that seems to attract the most visitors, probably because of the diversity it offers in the way of people, activities and climates.

Cities

The Peninsula offers the country's capital city of Kuala Lumpur, the ideal starting point of any holiday to Malaysia, bustling with activity and options for shopping, sightseeingor relaxation. 'KL' displays perfectly how Malaysia is at once both modern and ancient: the immense Petronas Twin Towers in KL are so tall it almost seems possible to see all the way to the traditionallonghouses of Sabah from their summit. When you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur, head to Malacca. This is a place steeped in history, as it was once a major trading post for spices, with traders arriving from all corners of the world creating a very unique potpourri of diverse communities and cultures.

History & culture

A charming history which dates back to the 15th century when Malacca was an important world trading port has turned Malaysia into a multicultural land of contrasts, with a vibrant culture based on a mixture of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous cultures and customs. The music, art, food, dance, architecture and general day- to-day living are influenced by this eclectic fusion, creating some of Asia's most fascinating sounds, sights and tastes. Throughout the year you can enjoy a variety of festivals and events that truly express this cultural potpourri.

Economically, Malaysia is one of the most prosperous countries in South-East Asia. Prior to the ravages of the 1997 Asian economic crisis, it enjoyed a period of rapidly increasing wealth and industrial development, which has helped to make it one of the most modern countries in the region. Malaysia is at the heart of the 'new Asia'.

Islands & beaches

Take an island break on the peninsula. Perak state's western coast faces the Straits of Malacca and not far off its shores are a number of islands. The nearest of these is Pangkor Island, with a lovely island lifestyle and some of the countries most outstanding beaches. The luxury of neighbouring Pangkor Laut is also the perfect escape. Penang is one of the highlights to any visit to Malaysia and, like Malacca, is a place rich in culture and history: enjoy palm-fringed beaches, exciting Georgetown and fantastic food. Langkawi Island is unspoilt and rustic; a tropical paradise spectacularly endowed by nature and shrouded in legends and mystery.

On the east side of the Peninsular, Tioman and Redang islands are two of the most beautiful islands in Malaysia, renowned for underwater adventure, snorkelling and windsurfing. And Cherating Beach on the mainland offers a traditional beachside village atmosphere.

Food

Food is always one of the main attractions in Malaysia. A melting pot of cultures between the Malays, Chinese, Indian and the West makes Malaysia a gastronomic heaven. Each state has something different to offer in terms of culinary delights, with its own distinctive specialities, but wherever you go you can be certain your tastebuds will be satisfied.

Shopping

Malaysians love to shop! This probably explains the vast number of luxury malls, stores and street-side stalls in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, making it a premier shopping destination in South-East Asia.

The Shopping Carnival, an annual sale held in Marchi April in Kuala Lumpur and other major cities, is a great time to visit Malaysia if you enjoy picking up a bargain or ten.
