Budapest Weather Guide
Budapest has a temperate, transitional climate with hot, humid summers and short, cold winters. The best time to visit is from March to May and September through to the end of October when the weather is ideal averaging around 10 hours of sunshine a day with less crowds in the city.
Season and Clothing
Summer: June to August
July and August are the hottest months when temps can reach over 30 degrees Celsius. You should also expect humid wet weather mid-season with sudden heavy downpours. Summer is peak tourist season in Budapest, so be sure to book ahead. The balmy nights are also a good time for the summer outdoor events. August is when the massive week-long music and cultural event of Sziget sets up shop on an island in Budapest, and the Jewish Summer Festival runs from August to September.
Average temperatures: 14 – 27 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Shorts, t-shirts, dresses and sandals.
Don’t forget: Sunnies, a hat and SPF50+ sunscreen.
Autumn: September to November
Except for November, which is one of the rainiest months with a big dip in temp, Budapest’s spring is mostly characterised by little rain and long, warm sunny days making early spring one of the best times to visit the city. Most of the summer crowds have gone by now so this is a great time to see the sights and explore the city to watch the leaves change colour for awesome Instagram shots. September also sees the Budapest International Wine Festival in town.
Average temperatures: 2 – 22 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Clothes for layering – pants, tops, and jumpers.
Don’t forget: Good walking shoes and a camera.
Winter: December to February
Winter in Budapest is short, cloudy and damp. Conversely, some winter days can also be very sunny with clear blue skies. January is the coldest month and the city also gets snow that can last a few days. If you can brave the chilly conditions, winter is low tourist season in Budapest and you can snap some amazing atmospheric pics around the historic sites, Christmas Markets and stunning scenery. It’s also a great time to head indoors and take in the museums and steam baths.
Average temperatures: -4 – 5 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Coats, thermals, scarves, gloves and boots.
Don’t forget: A camera.
Spring: March to May
Spring arrives in early April after windy, changeable weather in March and rain usually throughout May. With plenty of sunshine during the Budapest springtime, expect agreeable daytime temps and crisp conditions at night. Like autumn, spring is also an ideal time to visit the city with pleasant weather and less crowds – perfect for wandering around Budapest’s green spaces like Margaret Island, Géllert Hill and the Buda Hills. The Budapest Spring Festival also runs from March to April.
Average temperatures: 2 – 21 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Jeans, long-sleeve tops, hoodies, scarves and trainers.
Don’t forget: A coat.
