Although some may say the arid desert climate of Cairo consists of just two seasons that are just different versions of summer, Egypt’s capital has four distinguishable seasons. Although the temperatures don’t vary greatly, the weather does with wet and dry seasons and other climate changes. The best time to visit Cairo is from September to March. The months preceding and after winter offer the most sunshine, little rain and the best conditions for sightseeing and travelling around.
Season and Clothing
Summer: June to August
The low season in Cairo can be stinking hot and dry with scary temps of up to 45 degrees Celsius. The good news is that despite the heat, the humidity is quite low making it somewhat bearable, however the potent mix of heat, pollution and crowds can be overwhelming on the streets. Be aware that the holy month of Ramadan tends to fall in July or August, and many amenities are closed from sunrise to sunset.
Average temperatures: 21 – 35 degrees Celsius
Appropriate clothing: Lightweight shorts, dresses, sandals and tops.
Don’t forget: 50+SPF sunscreen and water.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is the ideal time to visit Cairo as the weather is warm with little rain and up to 10 hours of sun daily. The agreeable temps make it easy to get around to different touristic sites and wander around the streets of the city with ease. Heading towards winter, the nights can start to get cooler so it’s a good idea to also pack some warmer items for chilly evenings.
Average temperatures: 15 – 33 degrees Celsius
Appropriate clothing: Shorts, t-shirts, dresses.
Don’t forget: Good walking shoes and a camera.
