Introduction to Cancun
Welcome to the Mexican state of Quintana Roo - home to the world-famous city of Cancun. Without further ado, let’s party! Hot in more ways than one, Cancun is Mexico’s answer to Las Vegas and Ibiza. If the promise of a decent party doesn't seduce you, the magnificent beaches will. Sprawled across the country's Caribbean Coast, Cancun's natural beauty and warm sea temperatures tempt even the most hesitant beachgoers.
Once a sleepy fishing town, resorts in Cancun began popping up in the 1970s with the aim to turn the Yucatan Peninsula coastal town into Mexico's new Acapulco. Decades later, Cancun has surpassed its fellow beach cities to become one of Mexico's most famous calling cards.
Cancun's biggest claim to fame is, of course, its nightlife, which isn't necessarily limited to actual night-time. While bars and clubs are a dime a dozen in Cancun, some of the best venues take clubbing to the extreme. Like Coco Bongo, which features acrobatic performances, soap bubbles, balloons, special effects, conga lines and more. Then there's Senor Frogs where students let loose on the kitschy dancefloor and get to ride a waterslide between bars. For live music, Bulldog Café is the place to be, especially if you're into bands like AC/DC, Rolling Stones and U2.
Following a night of debauchery, the best hangover cure is to hit the beach. For swimming, head to Cancun’s northern beaches where palm trees provide the ideal shade and ocean conditions are perfect for swimmers. If you love the great outdoors, Cancun does not disappoint from its world-class golf courses to the incredible coral reefs for snorkelling and scuba diving. For something special, swim with dolphins at Dolphin Discovery on Isla Mujeres.
