Croatia Weather Guide
Croatia has a few different climate zones. The country’s interior is moderately continental, while the higher areas have a mountain climate. Along the Adriatic Coast, expect a lovely Mediterranean climate with beautiful sunny days in summer and fairly mild but wet winters.
Season and Clothing
Summer: June to August
Summers in Croatia are just divine for sailing with temperatures hovering around 23 to 26 degrees Celsius in the coastal areas. Even the sea temp is warm at around 25 degrees. The warmest months of the year are July and August with temps getting as high as 35 degrees. It rains a little bit in June, but not enough to dampen your holiday plans and any summer month is lovely in Croatia. You will be visiting in the high season, but hey, it’s worth it.
Autumn: September to November
If you want to skip the crowds and still appreciate lovely weather, autumn is a great time to visit Croatia, especially in September and October. The sea is still warm enough for swimming, ferries are running frequently and hotels have dropped their prices. The average autumn temps are as high as 26 degrees Celsius in September, but they drop a little in November reaching lows of 12 degrees.
Winter: December to February
Winter conditions vary dramatically in the different regions of Croatia. The Adriatic Coast has fairly mild but rainy winters, so the resorts are closed but it’s still not bitterly cold. The interior of Croatia, however, is pretty cold, which is great if you want to hit the beautiful snowcapped mountains, but not so great for wandering the streets and sightseeing. Christmas is quite a spectacle here, so it can be quite a good time to visit. It’s also a good time to come if you want a cheaper room. But yes, those temps can get as low as -2 degree Celsius.
Spring: March to May
Easter is generally the start of spring in Croatia. The Easter break attracts Croatians from all over the country to the coast to dip their toe in the sea - even if it’s still a little chilly for a swim. In March, the average highs are around 18 degrees Celsius and by May, it’s a pleasant 22 degrees. Spring is also a lovely time of year to visit Croatia’s national parks and the room rates aren’t too high this time of year either.
