Home to more bling than P.Diddy's crib
No costume jewellery here - all that glitters is definitely 18ct, 21ct, 22ct or 24ct at the world-famous Dubai Gold Souk. Packing more bling than an up-and-coming rapper with solid gold grills, this blindingly bright bazaar has over 300 stores with gold fashioned into rings, earrings, necklaces, pendants, bangles, bracelets and all sort of fancy adornments.
Located in Dubai's old financial centre of Deira, it's estimated that around 20 percent of the world's precious gold metal passes through the Gold Souk, which is known as one of the world's most important jewellery trading centres. Visitors from India, the Arabian Gulf and Africa, where gold jewellery is a precious and transportable commodity and part of a woman's marriage dowry, make up the majority of the gold marketplace's clientele. Gold prices in Dubai are said to be among the lowest and most competitive in the world and the precious metal is sold by the weight here with prices further determined by whether a jewellery piece is handmade or manufactured by machine. Bartering is expected, so if you're serious about buying - put your game face on.
Even if you don't desire your own piece of bling, the Gold Souk is a still spectacle to savour with the immense variety of styles on offer from traditional Indian jewellery adornments to Western designs as well as a truly dazzling array of colours including rose, white, yellow and even purple gold! Just the sheer sight of the shiny gold surfaces and atmosphere is worth the visit here, especially at night with that gilded glow emanating from the stores draped in all that bling.
The most romantic and scenic way to get to Dubai Gold Souk is by abra or water taxi from Creek in Bur Dubai to cross the Dubai Creek to Deira.
