Florence Weather Guide
Weather in Florence borders on a subtropical and Mediterranean climate – it’s hot and humid in the summer and cool and damp in the winter making it the perfect festival city almost all year round. The Estate al Bargello arts festival runs from May through to September and a plethora of music, theatre and dance performances abound in the city.
Season and Clothing
Summer: June to August
Things get pretty steamy during peak tourist season in July and August with July experiencing heatwaves reaching around 34 degrees Celsius. Throughout the season, Florence receives more than 10 hours of sunshine so make the most of early mornings and balmy evenings and take cover in galleries and indoor markets during the hotter parts of the day.
Average temperatures: 16 - 34 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Open shoes, sundresses, shorts and t-shirts.
Don't forget: Sunscreen and a shady hat.
Autumn: September to November
If you like to stroll in the rain on quiet cobblestone streets, autumn is a great time to visit Florence – particularly in November when the city experiences its wettest month of the year. Moreover, if you’re a nocturnal creature you’ll take pleasure in getting only 5 hours of sunshine per day during this season. For more lights-out action, from October to December cinema is celebrated at the city’s 50 Days of International Cinema event.
Average temperatures: 15 - 22 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Light layers and a jacket or jumper.
Don't forget: Waterproof shoes and an umbrella.
Winter: December to February
The chills set in come January, which is Florence’s coldest month of the year with temperatures as low as 0 degrees Celsius. If you’ve always wanted a white Christmas in Italy, Florence’s Gothic and medieval setting could be a snowy fairytale dream come true. Don’t miss the magical Christmas markets and traditional festive events leading up to Natale.

Spring: March to May
Spring is the ideal time to visit Florence; pleasant weather is teamed with flowers starting to bloom and green foliage returns to the parks. Temperatures in the city rise slowly from around 15 degrees Celsius in March to around 18 degrees in April, reaching the mid-20s by May. The festival season really gets into full swing at this time too, so if opera is your thing, catch a show at the Maggio Musicale festival from May to June.
Average temperatures: 15 - 25 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Light layers and a jumper for night-time.
