Kathmandu Currency Guide
Kathmandu uses the Nepalese Rupee.
Kathmandu has ATM facilities throughout the city, but the regional areas outside of the capital do not. If you plan to withdraw money or use your credit card while travelling, don’t forget to notify your bank before you go for security purposes and check what international withdrawal fees may apply to your card.
Before you travel to Kathmandu, it is important to convert some of your Australian Dollars into Nepalese Rupee to have with you when you arrive. If you run out of money in Nepal, it is possible to get money wired to you in Kathmandu however a service fee does apply.
Credit cards are accepted at major hotels, restaurants and shops as well as banks. If you don’t have a credit card, consider a debit credit card that allows you to access your savings account and the local currency from ATMs and wherever Visa, MasterCard and American Express credit cards are accepted. Credit cards are not readily accepted in remote areas or villages of Nepal.
