Los Angeles Weather Guide
As its famous Sunset Boulevard may suggest, Los Angeles is a sunny city. The city has so much sunshine (over 3,000 hours per year to be precise) that on average LA only receives 35 days of rain each year. With sun-filled days comes warm weather with annual average temperatures ranging between a mild 19 to 24 degrees Celsius. Such temperatures make Los Angeles home to a subtropical-Mediterranean climate with warm days and fog quite common.
Season and Clothing
Summer: June to August
Summers in Los Angeles are best spent under a palm tree in Malibu, Venice or Manhattan beach. During the summer months, temperatures are at their highest, averaging around 21 to 24 degrees Celsius and with an ocean temperature of 20 degrees during August. While summer in LA may be perfect for the beach, it also has its downside. Smog, for example, is common during summer, especially in June, while the peak period and school holidays also take place during the season. If you plan on hitting up LA's theme parks, avoid visiting during the school holidays or you'll be stuck in painfully long lines.
Average temperatures: 20 - 24 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Shorts and t-shirts, dresses and sandals.
Don't forget:Suncreen, your swimmers and moviestar shades.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn, or fall as they call in the US, is when festival fun comes to Los Angeles. One of the city's most famous festivals is the Fall Festival where harvest produce is celebrated with music, pumpkin carving and pie-eating contests. Such festivities take place in ideal temperatures with days ranging from 17 to 23 degrees Celsius and with little chance of rain. During this time you may need to wear a coat to keep the chills at bay, particularly at night when temperatures can drop to 12 degrees. And also don't forget your Halloween costume for trick or treating!
Average temperatures: 17 - 23 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: A number of layers and a warm coat.
Don't forget: A Halloween costume.
Winter: December to February
Though snow is very rare in Los Angeles, rain is quite common in winter. During this period, temperatures average around a mild 15 degrees Celsius but can also drop to single digits, particularly at night. While most LA locals tend to spend winter indoors shopping in the lead-up to Christmas, some make the most of the chilly weather by taking to the ice skating rink, which is set up annually in Downtown LA.
Average temperatures: 10 - 15 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Clothes for layering - jeans, jumper, long-sleeve tops.
Don't forget: A coat, scarf and an umbrella.
Spring: March to May
While Los Angeles is a great destination to visit all year round, spring would have to be when the city is at its most picturesque. Following winter, the city warms back up to 19 degrees Celsius and rainclouds are replaced with clear blue skies. Further to its beauty, spring is also a low season when it comes to travel and thus offers great accommodation prices and fewer crowds than usual. Now is the time to hit up the theme parks such as Disneyland Resort and Universal Studio Hollywood.
Average temperatures: 15 - 19 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Light layers and sneakers for getting out and about.
Don't forget: A coat or jumper for night-time.
