New York Weather Guide
New York is a city that experiences all 4 seasons. Summers are hot and humid, autumn is breezy and beautiful, in winter - when it rains it snows, and spring sees Central Park (and fashion) come into bloom.
Season and Clothing
Summer: June to August
Summer in New York is surprisingly hot and humid with many locals escaping the city for the cooler sea breezes in the Hamptons. If you don't mind sweating a bit, summer can be a relatively cheap time to visit New York with less crowds and more budget-friendly accommodation options.
Average temperatures: 18 - 25 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Light casual clothes and sandals.
Don't forget: Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
Autumn: September to November
New York is a pretty city and even more so in the fall. With comfortable temperatures, beaming light and vibrant leaves, fall is considered by many to be the best time to visit the Big Apple. Further to the weather, autumn in New York is also a buzzing time for events with much of the city's Broadway shows in full swing as well as Halloween and Thanksgiving celebrations.
Average temperatures: 11 - 17 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Light layers, a jumper and enclosed shoes.
Don't forget: Sunscreen, sunglasses and a Halloween costume.
Winter: December to February
By the time December comes round, New York is normally illuminated with Christmas lights and covered with snow. The temperatures drop well below 0 degrees Celsius as the season continues. Despite the cold, winter can be a fun time to visit New York, particularly if a white Christmas, festive New Year's Eve in Times Square for the ball drop and shopping sales are high on your priority list.
Average temperatures: 1 - 5 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Warm layers and boots.
Don't forget: A scarf, gloves and a big coat.
Spring: March to May
Spring in New York sees the snow replaced with greenery and vibrant foliage with much of Central Park coming into bloom. This time is particularly beautiful in the city and best spent outdoors wandering the streets, neighbourhoods and parks. The season is also full of action with the annual Easter Parade as well as the opening of the Major League Baseball season happening during these months.
Average temperatures: 8 - 15 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Light layers and enclosed shoes.
Don't forget: A camera and a jumper for night-time.
