Reykjavik Currency Guide
Reykjavik uses the Icelandic Króna
There are plenty of ATMs in Reykjavik that accept a variety of foreign cards. You can use your MasterCard, Visa, Maestro or Cirrus cards to withdraw cash. It’s always a good idea to check if your card can be used overseas before you leave – so give your bank a call.
In Iceland, plastic is fantastic. You can get by without carrying cash at all if you fancy. But it’s always good to have a few Króna for smaller purchases.
Also, if you’re planning to travel to little rural farmhouses or villages, it might be handy to carry cash. You won’t need cash for tips though – service and VAT is included in the price.
As we mentioned above plastic is king in Iceland. The locals use credit and debit cards for nearly all purchases. MasterCard, Visa, Maestro and Cirrus are popular, while Amex, JCB and Diners are also accepted in many hotels, shops and restaurants.
