Vienna Weather Guide

Located in the north east of Austria, Vienna’s elevation ranges from 151 metres to 524 metres. The city has warm summers with average temps hovering around 22 - 26 degrees. Winters are pretty cool with temps at about freezing point. So yes, it snows! Generally, you’ll find snow fall from December to March. It doesn’t rain too much except for in the Vienna woodlands which receives a decent drop of about 800 millimetres annually.

Season and Clothing

Summer: June to August

It’s not exactly an Australian summer, but it gets warm enough in summer for park picnics and good times in Vienna. The highest temp will be around 30 degrees, but generally you’ll find days are around 25 degrees. Nights do cool off a little though, so pack a cardy. You’ll find summer is a bit wetter than other seasons with June receiving around 70 milimetres of precipitation. But there’s also heaps of sunshine, sometimes more than 8 hours, particularly in July and August. Summer is the busiest tourist season, so expect higher rates.

Average temperatures: 22 – 26 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Light layters, pants, t-shirts and jumpers.
Don’t forget: A coat for the evenings.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn in Vienna is cold, but you won’t fight crowds. September is quite nice with days hovering around 20 degrees, however November (technically their winter) drops down to 7.5 degrees. There’s a bunch of fun events happening in autumn though such as Vienna Fashion Week, Long Night of the Museums and TennisTrophy.

Average temperatures: 7.5 – 20 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Warmer layers, jeans, long-sleeve t-shirts and jumpers.
Don’t forget: Your strut. Fashion week darrrrling.

Winter: December to February

While it’s pretty damn cold in winter, you’ll actually find a spike in tourism in December, with many holidays seeking a Viennese white Christmas. The highest temps in winter are around 7 degrees, but most of the time it’s below freezing. There’s not much sunshine in December either, at most, you’ll see around 2 hours for the month. The Vienna Ball season runs from December to March though, so it’s a good chance to frock up in many, many layers.

Average temperatures: 20 – 31 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Thermals, warm layers, winter coats, gloves, scarves and beanies.
Don’t forget: Formal attire if you plan on attending a ball.  

Spring (March – May)

Spring is a lovely time to visit Vienna. While it’s still pretty chilly, the tourism season has died down a little and that means you won’t pay inflated prices or wait in long queues. There’s a bunch of cool events happening too such as Sound:frame festival, the Vienna City Marathon, The Easter Market and Vienna Fair.

Average temperatures: 10 – 20 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Warm layers, jeans, jumpers and walking boots.
