Fancy some kale chips with your Sonic Youth? First, you can say Oya Festival if Øyafestivalen doesn't quite roll off the tongue. Four stages at Middelalderparken in downtown Oslo, Oya has grown from humble origins in 1999 into one of Norway’s largest festivals. Previous years have featured the likes of Outkast, The National, Cat Power, Iggy Pop and The Stooges, Beck, Air, Ladyhawke, Primal Scream and The Jesus and The Mary Chain. Of course, there's plenty of Scando rock and fancy cuisine thrown in too.

Once a year Middelalderparken - Medieval Park - in downtown Oslo comes alive for four days of the world's best music and Scandinavian rock festival fun. Øyafestivalen has been going strong for more than 15 years thanks to more than just the world-famous acts that grace its four main stages each year. Before you get your groove on amongst the ruins and leafy outlook, the festival hosts club night performances at most of Oslo’s central venues the eve before day one. Effortlessly cool and easy are words that are associated with this festival where you can indulge in all your Scandi-cool fantasies.

Oya Festival also boasts a dazzling array of food and huge quantities of organic food prepared by some of Norway’s leading chefs.  A focus on green-friendly running is evident. Medieval Park is a mere ten minute walk from Oslo’s Central Station or an easy tram or bus ride. The city is also the economic and government centre of the country and makes appearances on most-liveable lists etc often. Historically, you can of course pursue an interest in Viking heritage and also use the city to launch into the natural beauty of Norway.

When is it?

09th August 2016 to 13th August 2016

Tips and tricks

  • Norway, like many of the Scandinavian countries, is quite expensive. Oslo actually tied with Melbourne as the fourth most expensive city in the world in 2013. Hostels are the way to go for accommodation.

  • The festival opens and closes everyday. Doors open at 1pm, last admissions around 10pm and last act starts around 2300.

  • Bottles of any kind, bought food and drink, selfie sticks, umbrellas and animals are all not allowed along with the usual susects.

  • Food at the festival is a highlight and there are many vegetarian, organic and gluten-free options.

  • Further travel in Scandinavia is advised and Student Flights can help arrange a holiday package or tour!

  • Oyanatt is unofficially the festival after-party venue and, along with other venues, provide further experiences in The Oslo Music Scene after festival close.
