Bog monsters and non-traditional swimming strokes
If you’re anywhere near the quaint Welsh town Llanwrtyd Wells for World Bog Snorkelling Championships, we reckon it’s a sign you should brave the murky waters (and bog monsters) and give it a go. Each Bank holiday since 1976, Llanwrtyd Wells hosts the World Bog Snorkelling Championships where up to 200 participants don snorkels and masks and flipper down the 55-metre track for the fastest time (no traditional strokes are allowed!). When you look down at your dirty nails, muddy outfit and have a whiff at how bad you smell afterwards, just remember it’s all for charity and good fun.
While bog snorkelling is the main event, the day also features mountain bike bogging, awards for best costumes and more. Unless you’re an ultimate fan of bog snorkelling, which we’re sure exist somewhere, it’s a long way to travel from Australia just for the World Bog Snorkelling Championships. If you do decide to go, Wales is a fantastic place to explore from the gothic Cardiff Castle and the breathtaking countryside to the impressive coast and the surf at Pembrokeshire. Student Flights can arrange an individual itinerary that allows you plenty of time to scope out the bog before the race or get you on one of our all-inclusive group tours to Wales. Ask us how today!

Tips and tricks
It’s not the biggest sporting event in the UK, but Llanwrtyd Wells happens to be the smallest town in the UK. Student Flights can help book accommodation and transfers in advance, ask us how.
Don’t let the murky water put you off, have a go and shower later. BYO snorkel, fins and costume/wetsuit. And remember, no traditional swimming strokes allowed.
Need some pointers? Google Kirsty Johnson, record holder from 2014 with a time of 1min 22.56, and see how she did it.
You can reach Llanwrtyd Wells by driving 2.5 hours from Cardiff International Airport or catching the train to Swansea and getting on the Heart of Wales line to Llanwrtyd Wells station.
World Bog Snorkelling Championships is on private land at Waen Rhydd bog, just outside of town. You can walk or catch the free shuttle there. Just follow the signs.
