Ankara is a vast and breathtaking city, but it started out with only a few thousand in population and is often Turkey’s forgotten capital as the city of Istanbul gets all of the attention. Most of its early settlers lived around the Ankara Castle in the early 20th Century, but when the parliament of Turkey set up shop in 1920 and the Turkish War of Independence was later won, Ankara began to blossom into the mega city that it is today, and where 5 million people choose to call home. Don’t leave Ankara without seeing the Museum of Anatolian Civilisation, with artefacts of the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras on show. Make sure to sample the local street food – the kebabs on offer deserve more than just a drunken 3am going over, they’re truly the real thing and the city has an unmistakable progressive vibe that will truly draw you in.
