The largest airport in Greece is Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (ATH) located 27 kilometres east of downtown Athens. Named after a former prime minister and aviation enthusiast, it took over from Ellinikon Airport as Athen’s major aeronautical facility in 2001. The airport has its own rail station, which connects to downtown Athens and the port municipality of Athens, Piraeus. Two services run from the rail station - the metro line and the suburban rail network. OASA offer a bus service from the airport to the city centre, Piraeus and the majority of greater Athens. The most convenient flight path to Athens from an Australian origin is via the Middle East. Fly from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi in 14 hours and connect with a 5-hour flight to Athens. Departure from Sydney, with a flight change in Dubai, has a total flight time of 19.5 hours. And flights from Perth will more than likely connect through Doha and have an average total flight time of only 16 hours.
