Cheap flights to Berlin
Berlin is Germany’s capital and its largest city with a population of over 3.5 million people. The city is truly multicultural with residents from over 180 different countries and a variety of languages spoken on every street corner. Berlin has possibly the most powerful history of division and violence of any world city, but has reinvented itself and now proudly claims a culture of diversity and acceptance. No other city offers so many opportunities to experience a troubled past and developing future in the same party bag. With bomb-damaged buildings, Holocaust memorials, fine street art and warehouse raves all neighbouring each other, Berlin is also well known for its alternative culture and wild nightlife. Flights from Australia to Berlin will generally arrive at Tegel International Airport (TXL). Tegel is one of 3 international airports currently servicing Berlin with the new Brandenburg Airport set to open in the future. The airport is located 8 kilometres northwest of the city centre and on the approach to landing, look out for the architecturally stunning hexagonal-shaped main terminal. Bus is the most popular ground transportation option to either the city centre or a nearby subway station. Berlin’s U-bahn or S-bahn rail network then stretches to all areas of the city and is easily to negotiate. Taxis, limousines and private transfers are also available.
There are no direct flights from Australia to Berlin. Services from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth offer flight paths with one stopover in either Abu Dhabi or Doha. The total flight time for this route from Perth is 18 hours, add a couple of hours if you're leaving from Sydney or Melbourne. Alternative flight paths will require 2 changes in Singapore or Hong Kong with the first leg around 9 hours, then choose from London, Paris, Copenhagen or Helsinki for a second stopover before a short connecting flight to Berlin. Flight times will vary depending on the route taken. For more details and information on food, meals and entertainment on your flight, check out our airline guide.

The Fernsehturm (TV Tower) located at Alexanderplatz stands 368 metres tall and serves as a good reference point to orientate yourself in the city. The Brandenburg Gate, Brandenburger Tor in German, is one of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks and served as the crossing point of the Berlin Wall. Just west of the gate is the Reichstaggebaude, a glass-domed historical landmark with an internal spiral staircase. Much of the Berlin Wall itself has been destroyed but sections can still be found in various areas of the city. Friedrichshain contains the longest stretch of the Berlin Wall and is known as the East Side Gallery, due to panels of street art bringing the crumbling walls to life. Another must-see part of the Berlin Wall is Checkpoint Charlie where you can soak up some more history with the locals’ favourite dish of currywurst from one of the nearby food stalls. To complement Berlin's deep history are many great museums, the best of which are located on Museum Island near another worthwhile stop - the Berliner Dome.
