Flying from Australia to Sri Lanka you will more than likely arrive at Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). This is the busiest airport in the country and, in fact, one of the busiest in South Asia. Located in the Western Province of the country, it provides a great starting point to explore all Sri Lanka has to offer. The second busiest airport in the country located in the Southern Province is Hambantota’s Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI). Our Student Flights consultants can also offer advice on a range of transport options to get into the city centre, straight to your hotel or away to regional Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is not connected to Australia by any direct service. Flights will require a stopover and the most convenient locations include Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. From the east coast of Australia, expect an average flight time of 8 to 9 hours to reach your transfer destination. Student Flights consultants can help organise lay-over accommodation and tours if you’d like to explore the area or a quick transfer flight to continue your journey. From Darwin or Perth, the initial flight time will reduce by 2 to 3 hours. From any of the stopover locations, expect an average 3.5-hour flight to touch down in Sri Lanka. During international flights, most airlines will offer a selection of drinks and food as well as various in-flight entertainment. For specific services, check out our airline guide.

After many years of political and economic turmoil, Sri Lanka is now claiming its place on the tourist map. For a small country it really packs a punch with its unique culture and spiritually rich cities, friendly locals, plentiful wildlife and 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Unawatuna is the most popular beach for enjoying soft white sand and turquoise water. Arugam Bay is the surfing and chill-out capital of the country. Anuradhapura, a sprawling ruined medieval metropolis, is the cultural heart of the island. Sigiriya, affectionately known as Lion’s Rock, is another ruined city that hosts a 200-metre rock citadel and old royal palace. The Sinharaja Forest Reserve, another of Sir Lanka’s World Heritage sites, offers opportunities to see some diverse and unique wildlife including elephants, leopards, sloths and the purple-faced monkey. Hikers can head to the top of Adam’s Peak and marvel at a lone Buddhist temple.
Sri Lanka is an island with much more to offer than just beaches, beers and sunsets. Although those are pretty good there too. To learn more speak to your Student flights consultant to start planning your trip today.
