Staff Picks hotel review: Patong Beach Hotel
It’s all about location, location on a Thailand beach vacay and it really doesn’t get much better than a hotel right on the sand with the sea in your sights. If you want the lowdown on the best places to stay and par-tay in Phuket, you really need to know about our Staff Picks hotels. Located in only the best locations with stylish, comfy surrounds and plenty of sweet freebies included, our exclusive Staff Picks hotel packages have all been given the stamp of approval by the SF crew. Student Flights Groups Assistant Manager Tegan Mel takes one for the team and checks out the Patong Beach Hotel before you check in.
My first trip to Phuket was as a backpacker staying in some pretty grungy accommodation, so the 4-star Patong Beach Hotel is definitely worth the extra money to stay somewhere really nice! The hotel is close to everything with the beach just across the street, night markets nearby, and it’s just a block away from Bangla Road – Phuket’s nightlife, shopping and entertainment hub. There’s also a shopping centre and nightclub attached to the hotel!
I loved the look of Patong Beach Hotel, especially the rooms. They are very funky, bright and colourful with each one designed by a Thai artist, and I really liked how the balconies had fake grass, which made me feel like I was outside when I was inside! I stayed in a Superior Siam Wing room with a four-poster bed with draping – a bit of luxury that felt like I was sleeping by a river in Thailand. I also loved the bath where you can open up the bathroom and have a view outside while you chill out in the tub.
Within the hotel complex, the Banana Disco is a bit of fun with bananas hanging from the ceiling. While I was there, the staff danced around the pool every day at 2pm, which I thought was pretty entertaining! Even though there’s a nightclub next door, the hotel is really quiet with a friendly atmosphere – perfect for friends or couples looking for somewhere stylish to stay in a good location. There’s also two pools; I preferred the larger one as it has a bar and you can have drinks and food while sitting around the pool.
My top tip is: don’t sleep in and miss the breakfast! As part of the Staff Picks hotel package, you get a free welcome drink, wi-fi and a huge hot and cold breakfast. The crepes are made fresh from the crepe station and were so amazing, I ate them every day! I also recommend heading out to the night markets around Patong and checking out the beach – seeing the sunset at Surin Beach was one of my highlights (and I’ve been to 63 countries), plus the Bimi Beach Club goes off!
During my stay, I also went snorkelling off the Phi Phi islands and did a tour that included Maya Bay, where The Beach was filmed, and the beach is stunning with white sand and crystal-blue water. I also explored Phuket Town and ate dinner in a cute restaurant that looked like a treehouse, and chilled out with a massage on the beach.
I am definitely keen to head back to Phuket and stay at the Patong Beach Hotel again. The funky rooms; huge, tasty brekky plus the close proximity to the beach made it such good value for money. I would personally upgrade to a Sunset Spa Suite as you get your own private Jacuzzi on the balcony, which I think is pretty schmick!
