US music festivals to experience in 2015

Published February 5th, 2015

If you’ve just recovered from the Triple J Hottest 100 countdown on Australia Day (Chet Faker for number one – a yes or a no?), here’s some more music dates to stick in your diary for the first half of this year. While some major events are still to release dates and/or lineups (ahem, Lollapalooza), here’s some of the top US music festivals to experience in 2015, so far, IMO.

South by Southwest (SXSW)

Where? Austin, Texas

When? March 17-22 for the music component

What’s the vibe? A magnet for creatives of all persuasions, SXSW in Austin is the spot to see the next best thing. Of course, you already knew that, you hipster you.

Who’s headlining? Surfer Blood, Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts, Gang of Four

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

Where? Indio, California

When? April 10 -12 & April 17 – 19

What’s the vibe? If you haven’t heard of Coachella, welcome back to the world. Only the most popular music and arts festival stateside, duh.

Who’s headlining? AC/DC, Jack White, Drake

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

Where? New Orleans, Louisiana

When? April 24 – May 3

What’s the vibe? Don’t be put off by the old fogey title, like the Byron Bay Bluesfest, NO Jazz Fest rocks an eclectic lineup in an epic party town.

Who’s headlining? Elton John, Wilco, Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett

Rock in Rio USA

Where? Las Vegas, Nevada

When? May 8 – 9 and May 15 -16

What’s the vibe? Poptastic chart toppers meet legendary shredders? Only in Las Vegas, amiright? Don’t worry about a showdown between the two, the lineups are split into a Rock Weekend and a Pop Weekend. Phew.

Who’s headlining? Taylor Swift, No Doubt, Metallica

The Hangout Music Fest

Where? Gulf Shores, Alabama

When? May 15 -17

What’s the vibe? Party on the beach, y’all! Plus a wedding chapel, VIP poolside views of the stage and celeb chef chow. This could be our new fave festival.

Who’s headlining? Foo Fighters, Beck, Skrillex

BottleRock Napa Valley

Where? Napa, California

When? May 29 -31

What’s the vibe? Another outdoor festival pairing fine food with, err, fine music. Napa may be known for wine lovers, but with hip hop legends and rock royalty on the lineup, this is next-level Napa.

Who’s headlining? Robert Plant, Public Enemy, Snoop Dogg

The Governors Ball Music Festival

Where? New York City, New York

When? June 5 -7

What’s the vibe? Believe the hype. Gov Ball on Randall’s Island Park in NYC brings an edgy yet thoughtfully edited lineup to soundtrack the summer. A must-attend.

Who’s headlining? The Black Keys, Lana Del Rey, Björk

Where? Manchester, Tennessee

When? June 11-14

What’s the vibe? Mix some ‘80s throwbacks with some synth beats and serious spitters and you’ve got a hot music event, my friend. Plus kudos for handing the band announcements to the Insta peeps, Bonnaroo. We salute you!

Who’s headlining? Tears for Fears, Kendrick Lamar, Florence and the Machine

Consumed with unrequited wanderlust, I get my fix in 24/7 cities and hippie retreats. I'm still looking for the ultimate combo of secluded beach and major metropolis, and my happy place is a 5-star hotel room all to myself - sigh.
