Where to stay fit in Los Angeles

Published November 8th, 2015

In Los Angeles, fitness matters, and this sunny city doesn't come up short on studio classes and outdoor locales to keep its residents buff.

If you're travelling to LA or are preparing to call the city home, here are a few popular spots to add to your shortlist and help keep those pesky travel kilos off.

Brick CrossFit

CrossFit is having its big moment, and one good place to try your WOD, or Workout of the Day in CrossFit-speak, is Brick Crossfit in West Hollywood. Expect hardcore strength training paired with aerobics and gymnastics that will leave you aching the next day.

Runyon Canyon Park

The go-to spot for everything from leisurely walking your dog to uphill power running, rewarded with killer views from the top and quite possibly a celebrity sighting or two. Enjoy a free yoga class every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

Tracy Anderson Method

Fitness guru Tracy Anderson's Hollywood studio offers her classic mix of dance cardio and light-weight strength training to sculpt a lean body, without getting bulky.

New York's brand of indoor cycling-meets-spiritual quest is a hot ticket in West Hollywood. The class incorporates intense cardio bursts with hand weights and pounding house music.

Barry's Bootcamp

Founded in 1998 in West Hollywood, Barry's Bootcamp classes are no joke, which is why they draw in fit celebrities such as Jessica Alba, Katie Holmes, and Jake Gyllenhaal. While New York, London, and Bergen, Norway now boast at least one Barry's of their own, check out the original for a mix of treadmill intervals and strength training.

YAS Fitness Centers

If you like yoga but want the cardio-training of indoor cycling, have them both at YAS, with locations in downtown LA, Venice, and Silverlake. But don't expect meditative yoga here. Rather, 30 minutes of heart-pumping indoor cycling is followed by 30 minutes of "yoga for athletes".
