@polkadotpassport recaps her fave Gold Coast adventures

Published April 19th, 2016

We recently sent the constantly wandering photographer and blogger Nicola (@polkadotpassport) to the Gold Coast to seek out the best haunts and local adventures. Quirky eats were had, the beaches proved as faultless as the pics and one massive heart-shaped leap induced an extra few beats without doubt. Here’s what Nicola had to say about the experience and some tips for all you chill-sun-seeking AND adventure-lovers out there.

What makes the GC so different to other Aussie beaches?

Consistently amazing waves, endless stretches of white sand AND an ideal climate makes the Gold Coast beaches pretty unbeatable.

Best foodie stop?

I loved BSKT cafe at Mermaid Beach. The place has a really nice laid-back atmosphere and an incredible range of healthy, fresh breakfast and lunch options. Plus, the Cocowhip (vegan soft serve) is to die for!

Craziest thing you did?

Jumping into the love-heart shaped waterhole at Killarney Glenn!

Are you more beach or rainforest girl?

It all depends on my mood! If I am wanting to relax, I adore basking in the sunshine and listening to the lapping waves at the beach. If I'm feeling adventurous, I love a good walk through the rainforest to seek out waterfalls and amazing vantage points.

Best way to be immersed in nature?

I love finding beautiful spots in the middle of nowhere to have picnics. I always find taking the time to sit in nature makes me appreciate my surroundings so much more.

Best view?

The view over the Gold Coast during our skyclimb at the Q1 was pretty unbeatable. It was a super clear day when we went up, which meant we could see as far as Brisbane in the distance!

QT Gold Coast in five words?

Any sweet surprises along the way?

I must say, our high tea at the QT FIXX cafe was filled with sweet surprises! In line with the eccentric nature of the QT hotel, the selection of treats we were presented with were all as quirky as they were delicious.

Most memorable moment you’ll home take with you?

One of my most memorable moments would have to be stand up paddle boarding (SUP) at Tallebudgera Creek! I used to come swimming at this spot all the time when I was a kid, so coming back and experiencing this place in a new and novel way was really special.

Any handy insider tips?

My biggest tip to visiting the Gold Coast is to not spend all your time at Surfers Paradise! If you want to hit the beach, head further south and check out the less touristy Currumbin or Greenmount Beach. Once you've had your ocean fix, head inland to the Gold Coast Hinterland to discover secret swimming holes and waterfalls surrounded by lush rainforest at Mount Tambourine. Finally, if you are looking for a great spot for dinner, head along the main street of Burleigh Heads. Here, you’ll find a plethora of hip dining spots such as Justin Lane, which boasts the best pizzas on the coast!

One last highlight?

Waking up and watching the sun rise over the ocean at Burleigh Heads was such a magical moment.

Tijana Jaksic

After some hardcore scrimping and saving, Tijana’s first backpacking trip confirmed she was onto something good. She hasn’t stopped since. Fave memories to date include dancing with locals in the streets of Havana, bartering for too many scarves in the markets of India, getting lost in the bustle of Hong Kong, sipping cocktails in the Greek Islands and jumping off waterfalls in Croatia. Now she gets to write about travel for a living – the best way to satiate the wanderlust between adventures.
