Bizarre things covered by travel insurance

Published August 31st, 2017

Travel insurance is one of those niggling life admin things – so easy to put off, but it has to be done.

Want to ride a scooter around Bali? Go paragliding in Switzerland? Then you def don’t want to risk it.

Thing is – you really kind of have to read the fine print to know what you’re covered for (yep, even the asterisks). Turns out, some travel insurance policies will cover you for some pretty random things* beyond getting pick-pocketed in South Amercica and slipping on a cobblestone in Europe.

Air guitar

Yep, some places will even insure you for air guitar on holidays. Because there are plenty of boring, beautiful and random moments on the road that could easily inspire any traveller to rock it out with a bit of air guitar…right?

Or maybe you’re heading to the Air Guitar World Championships (it’s real). Because we all know packing a REAL guitar isn’t very practical (just ask the guy in your hostel who did).

At the very least, you can always rely on a bit of air guitar for a good Insta photo.

Take it next level and next thing you know it’s all headbangs, high kicks and… oops, a broken elbow.

The view was so pretty I couldn't help myself...

Pirate hijacking

While you might not mind an encounter with Jack Sparrow (because who doesn’t want a selfie with Johnny Depp?), we’re guessing the real pirates out there aren’t that nice – or entertaining.

Yes, real life pirates. Google it!

Luckily your chances of getting hijacked while sipping cocktails and sunning yourself on a cruise is really (really) low. You never know though!

Nope. No pirates here.

War games & reenactments

We all know real war is bad. But even fake war can be dangerous.

In the heat of performance things can go pear-shaped, even with costume swords and cannons.

Plan on joining a re-enactment of Viking duels or American Civil War battles on your travels? Check your travel insurance policy for peace of mind as you march into ‘battle’.

Game of Thrones reenactments in Dubrovnik, perhaps?

Stilt walking

Maybe you’re in a travelling circus. Maybe you need to make a few extra bucks on the road. Maybe you want a better view than all the other tourists in your way. We’re not going to judge.

Though chances are, you saw someone else doing it and just thought it looked fun.

Thankfully some insurance companies won’t leave you high and dry should you take that tumble down from heaven.

Tijana Jaksic

After some hardcore scrimping and saving, Tijana’s first backpacking trip confirmed she was onto something good. She hasn’t stopped since. Fave memories to date include dancing with locals in the streets of Havana, bartering for too many scarves in the markets of India, getting lost in the bustle of Hong Kong, sipping cocktails in the Greek Islands and jumping off waterfalls in Croatia. Now she gets to write about travel for a living – the best way to satiate the wanderlust between adventures.
