Five things to love about sailing the Greek Islands
Five things to love about sailing the Greek Islands
Nothing entices Aussies more than the promise of gloriously long sun-kissed days, mouth-watering food and crystal clear water - with the added bonus of offering an escape from the ‘bitterly’ cold winters!
Yes, we’re talking about a summer in the Greek Islands!
That same summer that flooded all of your social media feeds last year.
That same summer you begrudgingly ‘liked’ from under your doona, as your friends posted albums of tanned photos online.
That same summer you promised yourself you’d experience first-hand next year, instead of vicariously living through Snapchat.
Just in case you needed any more convincing, here are five reasons why sailing the Greek Islands should be your next European summer adventure.
1) The food
We’ll start with a shocking confession; haloumi is almost impossible to find. Before you cancel your plane tickets, there is a sensationally good alternative – saganaki! On top of your new favourite fried cheese, expect to be spoilt in every taverna with fresh seafood, traditional Greek dishes (moussaka is a must try), salads (vegetarians/vegans - we got you!) and yiros pitas. If you’re travelling on a budget, you can easily get away with a yiros pita for about 3 Euro each meal – bargain!
2) The weather and water
The Ionian and Aegean Seas are every shade of blue imaginable. The water is warm yet refreshing (about 22-25 degrees) with exceptional visibility – so bring your GoPro! Pair this with impeccably clear skies and constant beamy sunshine and you have the perfect recipe for a summer vacay. By the end of your trip, you’ll transform into a beautifully bronzed god/goddess and just to top it off, you’re also guaranteed some of the best sunsets of your life. Bookmark Oia Village whose sweeping views overlooking the Santorini caldera will kick some serious Insta goals. While sailing you’ll be treated to brilliant sunsets on the reg – the sun dipping below the horizon as you drift into port is the perfect way to cap off each day.
3) The serenity
Sailing the Greek Islands can be whatever you make of it. Having an expert skipper at the helm means you can take it easy and enjoy the ride, or you can jump in and ‘learn the ropes’.
If you’re after a relaxing time with copious snorkelling and swim stops - you’ve got it!
If you want to wake up early and hike through some gorgeous rocky landscape – no worries!
If you’d prefer to soak up the Vitamin-D and mingle on-board – there will be plenty of likeminded travellers! One thing is for certain, the rhythmic lapping of the ocean against yacht will put you in a state of utter bliss.
4) The party
If you’re looking to sleep off a big night, those day time sailings between islands offer a prime time for topside siestas. Nap while you’re being whisked around to the best islands and wake up in time for the action! Summertime in Mykonos is a hub for some of Europe’s best DJs (it’s Ibiza-esque) and their nightlife certainly lives up to the hype. As night falls, nightclubs and bars spill out onto cobblestone laneways and the Mykonos Old Town centre vibrates with energy from fellow partygoers. Looking for something more glam? Mykonos beachfront clubs and their 1L cocktails await! Mercifully, several sailing adventures either start or finish in Mykonos, offering a chance to extend pre or post sail – you might need a day of lounge lizard-ing to recover!
5) The sailing experience
There is no better way to see the Greek Islands than on a yacht. Being on a yacht means you’re not limited to deep water, so there’s plenty of cave hopping and offshore beach anchoring on the cards. Flying around the islands means hours spent at airports, plus missing the best way to see the Greek Islands up close and personal, sailing!
Picture this: It’s the middle of the day and the Mediterranean sun is at its peak. You’ve got refreshing water literally a hop, skip and a jump (or backflip) away! After cooling off, you’ll bask in the afternoon rays and cap off your day by sleeping out under the stars (no mozzies!) while the waters of the Aegean rock you to sleep.
