Getting your celeb fix in LA

No trip to LA is complete without catching glimpse of a celeb. Ryan Gosling. A Kardashian. Orlando Bloom. Any celeb will do! And it’s not as hard as you may think. Tinseltown is full of celeb spotting opportunities, from the ritzy restaurants to the boutiques, the streets (if you’re lucky) and Carbon Beach. And if all else fails, a tour of the celeb houses is your next bet. Think mansions on steroids.

Being a big kid at Disneyland

Because everyone wants to meet their favourite silver-screen princesses and princes, heroes and villains IRL. Feel the magic. The happiest place on Earth never disappoints. Read: never! So don those Mickey and Minnie ears and step into the Magic Kingdom and beyond. Eat all the treats. Ride all the rides. And finally live out your greatest fantasties.

Soaking up that NYC skyline

From the Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building. On a picnic blanket in Central Park. Or peering straight up to the sky when you’re lost in a back alleyway. Or in the middle of Times Square. It doesn’t matter where you are. New York City takes your breath away at every angle. One thing’s for sure - the NYC skyline never gets boring.

Being wowed by Yellowstone

It’s the first national park ever. Like in the world. And it’s full of wow moments. You could spend days exploring Yellowstone National Park. The hot springs and geysers, the waterfalls and valleys, and even its own version of the Grand Canyon. Try spotting bears and wolves or just soak up that peace and fresh air. This is the USA - sans the city hustle.

Letting loose in Las Vegas

More bars than you can count. And more ways to have fun than you’ll ever even know. Vegas is THE place to let your hair down. In 36 hours you can ride down the Strip in a stretch limo, stay out until 5am, relax by the hotel pool, shop your heart out, see a world-class show and try your luck on the blackjack table, if only once for the brag.

Cycling over a San Fran icon

The Golden Gate Bridge is nice to admire, sure. But the real beauty of it is getting up close, feeling the wind in your hair and pedalling over this bright orange marvel with not a care in the world. The sparkling bay on one side, the city on the other. It’s an epic ride. And the best way to top it off is butter-covered cracked crab with freshly baked sourdough afterwards at Fisherman's Wharf. Perfect.

Chillin’ by the pool at Palm Springs

Coachella or no Coachella, Palm Springs is hot to visit. In all the ways. Always. Just a nifty little 1.5 hour detour from LA, this man-made oasis in the desert is a new kind of heaven. Think epic blue swimming pools in fancy resorts, with towering palms and barren mountains all around. And once you’ve towelled off, don’t miss the Insta-famous rainbow coloured icon that is Salvation Mountain. Oh and tour the epic mid-century homes while you’re at it.

Eating all the Creole foods in New Orleans

Eat all the Creole foods to the tune of fine jazz in New Orleans. The mix of French, West African, Spanish, Caribbean and Southern flavours is an unforgettable combo. Think gumbo, jambalaya, po-boys and sugar-dusted golden beignets. Best topped off with the signature local Ramos Gin Fizz cocktails on Bourbon Street.

Tijana Jaksic

After some hardcore scrimping and saving, Tijana’s first backpacking trip confirmed she was onto something good. She hasn’t stopped since. Fave memories to date include dancing with locals in the streets of Havana, bartering for too many scarves in the markets of India, getting lost in the bustle of Hong Kong, sipping cocktails in the Greek Islands and jumping off waterfalls in Croatia. Now she gets to write about travel for a living – the best way to satiate the wanderlust between adventures.
