7 Epic off the beaten track adventures

Published June 18th, 2019

Like to explore the hidden gems, less known to the world? Adventure tours know where the backwoods are at. And the best part is that you can do incredible things in beautiful places and still sit back and chill when you want. Let the guide sort out the logistics.

Go Felucca Sailing to Luxor, Egypt

Everyone’s heard about sailing Croatia and the Greek Islands, but just across the Mediterranean, Egypt is where the sailing adventures are proper epic. Think balmy days under the Egyptian sun and wind in those cotton sails on a traditional felucca sailboat, gliding down the Nile. Chill out on the cushions on deck. Spot village life as you drift by. And step off to swim and explore temples. Can it get any better than this? #sailintothesunset

Party ‘til dawn in Tel Aviv, Israel

Didn’t know Tel Aviv was a party hotspot? Lonely Planet ranks it one of the top 10 party cities on earth. So don’t just look forward to the bars and nightlife - prepare yourself for it. You could start at a beach bar in time for sunset, before moving on to a breezy pub, a backstreet wine bar and an art-laden gallery bar. Then follow the beats to some live music joints before hitting your stride at the clubs. DJs, dance floors, laser beams and all.

And once the hangover sets in? There are 16 local beaches to choose from. All stunning. All refreshing.

Sleep under the stars in the dunes of Merzouga, Morocco

Escape any sight of city lights and find yourself cocooned by the rolling red dunes of the Sahara Desert. By day, 50 shades of red will blow your mind… best admired from a lounger by the pool. By night, it goes next level. You’ve never seen the Milky Way like this - stars so bright, as if in black and white neon. These bedtime views will have you dozing off in no time.

Hike rice terraces in Longsheng, China

Step into the lush, remote rice terraces and feel the peace. Admire the beauty and breathe in the fresh air as you carve up the rice-dotted layers of mountainside to the summit. At Dragon’s Backbone (the name of the summit - no real dragons here sorry) you’ll love the reward. Views for miles. All them adventure feels. And high fives all round.

Party cruise around Halong Bay, Vietnam

Don’t just cruise Halong Bay. Party cruise Halong Bay. Spend your days partying and lazing on the sundeck between endless dips in turquoise waters. It’s a fun-packed cruise with some of the best scenery in the world: those famed jungle-clad islands jutting out of deep emerald waters. “Magic” is how some would describe it. Magic is how you’ll feel.

Still need more reasons? The sunsets are on point. You can go for a paddle and weave through these limestone pillars. The food on board is legit fresh and delish.

Zipline through the treetops in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Fly like Tarzan. Or fly like a monkey. Doesn’t matter really - either way you’ll be grinning hard as you zip through the treetops on the Flight of the Gibbon treetop adventure. Take on 30 platforms over 5km of ziplines up to 50m above the valley floor. Plus, there are three hanging sky bridges, two staircases, one treehouse, two rappel descents and one waterfall to check out after. If you’re lucky, you might spot a gibbon IRL too.

BTW did we mention the crazy 800m-long zipline section? Eight. Hundred. Meters.

Go scuba diving in the Red Sea, Jordan

There’s scuba diving… and then there’s scuba diving. Because where you do it counts, and in the Red Sea off Aqaba - which is Jordan’s only coastal city - the scuba diving is honestly some of the best in the world. You don’t want to miss out. Colourful corals, stunning reef fish and clear blue waters are what it’s all about. And if you prefer to keep to the surface, there’s always snorkeling!

Tijana Jaksic

After some hardcore scrimping and saving, Tijana’s first backpacking trip confirmed she was onto something good. She hasn’t stopped since. Fave memories to date include dancing with locals in the streets of Havana, bartering for too many scarves in the markets of India, getting lost in the bustle of Hong Kong, sipping cocktails in the Greek Islands and jumping off waterfalls in Croatia. Now she gets to write about travel for a living – the best way to satiate the wanderlust between adventures.
